Drabble #2, for ariestess
I quit. I'm not going to even try aiming for an even hundred words on the rest of these.
"Kryn? Tyler's mommy is having a baby sister."
Karen put down her wrench and spun around to mirror Emily's crosslegged pose on the garage floor. "She is, isn't she? Is Tyler excited?"
Emily shook her head emphatically. "He wants a brother."
Karen chuckled. "I think he'll like his sister when she gets here, even if she is a girl."
"Me too." There was something very hesitant about her answer. Karen sat and waited for Emily to figure out what else she needed to say.
"Kryn? Tyler's mommy said that a mommy and a daddy make a baby," Emily said quietly.
"That's right," Karen said, not sure of where Emily was thinking.
"I don't have a daddy."
"Aw, Monkey..." Karen pulled Emily into her lap. "You had Mimi and Mommy, and now you have Mommy and me. I think that's pretty special, don't you? You don't have to have a daddy."
"I know that," Emily said, and the scolding tone in her voice made Karen wonder what vital part of the conversation she was missing. "How did I get made?"
Oh. That.
"...What do you think?" Karen asked her. When unsure, ask questions. Daniel Jackson's 'Surviving the Natives' lecture suddenly seemed very relevant to life on Earth.
Emily thought it over, and she smiled brightly when she found the answer. "Mommy and Mimi made me!"
Karen tried to keep the surprise off her face. "They did?"
Once again, Emily's look make Karen think that she was just a little bit slow. "You don't have to have a daddy, Kryn. I grew in Mommy and Mimi was my mommy too, so they made me."
"You're a good thinker, kiddo," Karen said in relief. It'd do as answer for now. And next time the topic came up, she was going to make damn sure that Darya was home to help out. Mommies knew these things.
