Goat is from Middle English gote, from Old English gāt; akin to Old High German geiz "goat," Old Norse geit, Latin haedus "kid." Modern German uses die Ziege and die Geiß, the latter is certainly cognate with goat.
The perfectly round goat was difficult to render, I was thinking of an unnaturally white goat, but he ended up looking sheepish. The mottling improved him.
