Night Watch is one of the Guard books, and those are better if you read them in order, but it's not essential to understanding what's happening. More along the lines of, if you know where the characters have been, some of their actions have more meaning, etc. I started reading Discworld back when Hogfather was first released; I forgot to send in the "don't send my monthly selections" postcard to the Sci Fi Book Club, and they sent me Hogfather. I read it, not realizing that it was like number 5 of the Death books, and I loved it. Later when I'd gone back and bought the previous volumes and read them and I reread Hogfather, some stuff made more sense to me, but it wasn't like a series where you're totally lost if you don't read the first ones first. The problem with Discworld is that there are like 30 books, all set in the same world, but divided into like 5 separate series by sets of characters. I ordered every Discworld book I could get my hands on, and when they were all at my house, I read the backs to figure out who the main characters were and then checked the publishing date to get the order right. if you like Night Watch, I'd suggest getting on Amazon for the other books because it's cheaper that way.
