I imagine the students are watching your every move. As much as I look at your photos of the Maasai and think how exotic they look, I'm sure they see you as the exotic ones!

And yes--I often think about how very fortunate we all are in America--by sheer virtue of our being born here, we have a leg up on just about anyone else in the world. I try not to forget that.

The NY Times had an article recently about a "new wave" of Lost Boys in Sudan, and I felt so helpless reading it, thinking that some places in the world just struggle for generations and things never seem to change. Those poor people are born into such difficult lives and they know nothing else. It breaks my heart...

You'll be a good role model for them all, Jen--I have no doubt of that.

The NC Zoo just announced in today's paper that there's been a new giraffe born into their midst. The mother was pregnant when we visited a few weeks ago. Big goin's-on here in NC, I'll have you know! No elephants under the baobabs, but still...
