Claire sat down at her computer and tried to ignore the closed bathroom door and the timer with a little less than three minutes left on it. It wasn’t working. Every time she tried thinking about wedding stuff, which was in fact the real reason why’d she started working the swing shift (not to puke out her guts and make an emergency trip to the drug store).
The weird thing was she didn’t know if she wanted to pregnant or not. The last time she had wanted it to be negative. She’d only been 20, the potential father had cheated on her with their male art teacher, and she wasn’t at all ready. Now she was 26 and about to marry the potential father, but she still didn’t know if she was ready. Of course, half time she didn’t know if she was ready to get married and that was happening in August.
Claire was certain of one thing. She was keeping the baby, if she was pregnant. She didn’t want another abortion, she didn’t think she could go through it again and she hoped Ted would understand that. Actually, she was certain he would. He was that type of guy and he treated Ruby like a baby half the time. She still didn’t know.
She got up, sat down on the couch, and started petting Ruby. Her mom, who had become a dog expert after starting a doggie day care, always complained when she heard about people getting rid of their dog after having a baby.
The timer beeped. Both Claire and Ruby looked at it as it continued to beep. After a few moments Claire got up and turned it off and then made her way to the bathroom. Ruby’s eyes followed her the whole way as if she knew something important was happening.
She took a deep breath and picked up the test. Two lines. It was positive. She was going to have a baby.
