Library Frustrations

Aug 10, 2007 11:03

I'm really frustrated, actually a little angry.

I love my library.  I visit my library 3-5 times a week.  I check out dozens of books each month.  (Books=books, videos, cds, etc)
I rarely have overdue books and will always pay the fees without hassle at the time of return, usually with exact change.

I returned a large bag full of books on Monday.  We go out of town this weekend and it was time to not have extra books on hand.
There was this library person working Monday night who was rude.  She started this.

At the time of checking out, I handed her each library card to verify nothing was out on any, that I really had cleared my accounts. (mine & the kid's anyway)

She gave me the print out of my account, and she informed me W had an overdue book.  My print out was long, which meant she hadn't checked in my books yet.  I requested she check in W's book so I could pay the fine, she refused.  The book was sitting on the desk, right there in front of me, and she claimed I was holding up the line and she couldn't check it in now and I had to move.

It gets better.

Tuesday, I verify my account online before heading to the Library.  Now I have an overdue book.  And Golly it was one that went back the day before.  Actually two books on my account were returned on Monday and still checked out to me on Tuesday.   I print this error out, go to the library and guess who is on the circulation desk, yep, same female from last night, the one to whom I returned the items.

I go to the shelf, find the books, verify that I was indeed correct.  I go to the counter, feeling spiteful, and inform the female the books were returned the night before and I just found them on the shelf so she needs to fix it.  She says she'll take care of it.

Right.....

Wednesday, Pete returns some books, and while picking up a requested item for me, is informed I have an overdue book on my account.

SIgh......

Thursday I go back in, for the sole purpose of resolving this.  I am informed that yes, there are copies of the books on the shelf and she (same punk female) can see how I could be confused, but the bar codes are incorrect, they are not the copies out on my account.

Now her patronizing, passive-aggresive tone put me in orbit, but I kept calm and told her I returned my items and asked what do we do now.  She proceeded to verify what to do with another librarian.  The thing they chose to do was label the books on my account "Claimed Returned".  I'm so angry, it is like they are labeling me a liar.  I returned the darn books.  I really did.  I hate being called a liar.

This morning, Friday, still stewing over this, I looked up the books on the internet card catalog.  Guess what?

The library only has one copy of one of the books.  The other book has two copies, but one is checked out, before my return day of Monday.  So if there are copies on thier shelves, why are the bar codes not matching my "Claimed Returned"?

Am I a happy person over this?  Not in the least.

I wrote an email to the library, copied the information from their own website and asked for an explanation of why if there was only one copy and it is on the shelf could the bar codes be different on the book.

I can accept being wrong.  Show me how and why I'm wrong.  Explain the logic.
If I am not wrong stop telling me I am.  Apologize and Fire the punk female.

yeah, like that will happen.....
