So tonight I had my biomedical ethics course. The topic of discussion was emergency contraceptives. We discussed the potential risks due to it and whether or not it should be provided over the counter or with a prescription. I didn't realize how many ethical issues go into this one simple drug. When does life begin? This is a major debate as to if this drug is ethical or not. Personally,I believe life begins when the sperm and egg unite. So you'd think I would not believe in emergency contraceptives such as planB...although I do. There are so many factors where this could be necessary: rape, disease that prevents a healthy pregnancy, or even an unwanted pregnancy because this could result horribly if the child is unwanted. I'm not debating if it's right or not I guess....just was thinking about it after class...and figured I'd write down my thoughts. :-)
