Jan is ganged up on. Airmed joins the fray in order to help Jan.
Airmed was walking around town on a quest that really wasn't a quest. She just wanted to see if there were any stores that would catch her interest and if she could buy her brother and friends a random gift because she felt like it. It always felt good to give someone you cared for something.
However, just as she was about to turn around a street corner, something stood out in her peripheral vision. Pivoting, the spirit moved to take a closer look, and she did not like what she saw. She did not like what she saw at all.
And what she saw was someone getting ganged up on.
So she sprinted towards the scene with a very determined and displeased look on her face. "Hey! What are you doing?!"
Jan had been taking a nice walk in town, when a person had asked to see his wallet. Well, he'd had to inform them that he didn't actually have one on him, seeing as he didn't have any money, but for some reason he simply hadn't believed him and had called his friends to verify Jan's story.
They were being rather unpleasant actually, getting in close, and making rather ungentlemanly threats and accusations about his sexuality. He'd tried explaining otherwise, but to no avail - they'd taken it as some kind of threat.
There had been sneering and growling.
When he heard the girl's voice, he was busy raising his arms up to protect his chest. "Ah, little girl! I don't think you should come over here!"
When the man being cornered cautioned her away, she shook her head. "I'm sorry but I can't just look away when something like this happens!"
Using her small size and agility and flexibility that she built up over many, many years, Airmed maneuvered her way until she was beside Jan.
It helped that the people ganging up on Jan were either amused or in disbelief that this little girl was butting in on their business and didn't think she could do much - especially as they voiced those opinions out loud for her to hear, but she paid no mind.
She just stared them down like the bamf she was.
"...please little girl, leave," he said, as one of them laughed and told him that a little girl sheild woldn't matter to them. "They might hurt you!"
Despite this, he grabbed her collar and tugged her in a little closer. If necessary, he could drag her out and run with her...
Sadhbh blinked when he pulled her closer to him. Well, she did look like a little girl, and she did understand the concern, but sometimes, it did get old.
"Don't worry," she said, slipping into a proper defensive stance. There was no way that Airmed would willingly instigate a fight unless she absolutely, absolutely had to -- or had no control over it. "I'll be fine.
"Of course, this could be all be solved if you would all be nice and leave," she addressed the men surrounding them.
Of course, her suggestion was met with laughter and scoffs.
The men grew closer, closing off their exits.
The girl's safety in mind, Jan threw a punch at one of the men (without any warning, very unlike himself). Bad move- the five or so others closed in quickly, leaving no room for him to move, pushing kicking, punching.
He kept his guard up, holding his arms up, one leg in front of the girl, the only thought in his head being to protect her. His guard to high, someone went for his stomach; he blocked and a fist connected with the side of his head.
Things were getting out of hand, quickly. One or two he could take, but this was too many...
When the fight broke out, Airmed was more startled than she thought she would be, but then again, she never got used to violence even after all these years, and she hoped she would never get used to it.
As the majority of the men went for Jan, Airmed protested , "Hey! Stop it!" and was, of course, ignored.
Realizing right away that while Jan had some experience but he couldn't hold off this many, Airmed jumped into the fray, immediately flipping one of the men onto his back.
When one of his friends saw what happened, he did a double take before advancing towards the little girl, who blinked but did not falter. Airmed generally took (unfair, she supposed) advantage of her guise as a little girl, but it still disappointed her when humans would still come after regardless even if she could take care of herself and was years older.
She waited for the second man to approach her and make a move before she dispatched him as well before checking on Jan. Unfortunately, the men she faced had only been down and not out.
Both Jan and the man closest to him stopped and stared mouths open. If Jan was a more competent man, he would have taken this opportunity to fight back while his enemy was shocked.
Rather, it was the other guy who recovered first, grabbing him round the throat - one arm throttling, the other pulling hard on his hair. Jan pulled hard on his arm, trying for air. He would have kicked, but the other man was about half a foot shorter, causing him to bend over backwards.
Airmed really, really wished for her shikai or bokken at that moment. It lengthened her range, which she needed, considering how small she was. There were times when her agility just wouldn't cut it, and this was one of those times as one of the men came at her from behind and his reach was obviously longer than her own.
He grabbed her from behind, and it took her a moment to get out of his grip before she broke down and gave him a blow that she knew would knock him out. She would repent over this later since more pressing matters were at hand.
That boy? man? was in danger, and she tackled the one pulling on his hair, successfully but just barely so getting him away.
Jan skipped out of his grasp and then took advantage of the girl's distraction to hit back, catching him between the eyes. Without his boxing gloves, it hurt more than he would have expected and he delivered the next blow with his foot - stamping on his chest.
"Little girl, run!"
Sadhbh looked over at the boy? man? when he yelled at her to run. Well, he looked like he was about ready to run, too, and she hoped he would, too, because she would take this route to end the fight if the other men would leave them be.
Nodding, she took off, looking behind her occasionally to see who would follow.
Jan ran too, his stumbling, baby duck-like steps taking him surprisingly far, surprisingly fast. He kept slower than normal though, preparing to protect her if necessary.
Finally, they got away, and Jan stumbled, falling against a wall and breathing hard.
Airmed was breathing hard, too, hands on her knees as she bent over trying to regain her breath. She peered over at Jan, though, trying to discern just how injured he was and if he needed a secret healing.
"Are you okay?" she asked once she was able to stand upright without having to take deep, heaving breaths every second.
"I'm fine," Jan said, a little hesitantly. His chest hurt from the running, and he was developing some fine bruises on his knuckles, left eye and bloody nose, but he was otherwise okay.
"Are you alright?" He was more worried about the small girl.
"I'm fine," Sadhbh said, and she mostly was. Her hair had fallen out of her braids, her clothes were ruffled, and she suspected she was developing a bruise on her back that would go with the random collection of scratches she felt on her arms, but that was all.
Taking a closer look at him, she told him with a small frown, "We should probably do something about your eye and knuckles."
"It- it's fine...badges of honour! I am Polish, these bruises are nothing," he said, nodding enthusiastically. "You know, Jeszcze Polska nie zginęła, kiedy my żyjemy!" The polish was sung in his slightly off-key, boyish voice, as he air conducted.
"I'm fine, I'm okay..."
Her brows furrowed as she tried to remember enough Polish to translate what he sang. Was that the national anthem of Poland...? Well, that didn't matter too much.
Frowning, she objected, "Even if they're nothing, they still need to be treated." She looked up at him, determination in her eyes and a stubborn set to her jaw. "Especially if you don't want anyone worrying too much about you."
"It's really okay," he put up his hands. "Listen, I can-...I can get a plaster later. You, you get some help, okay?"
She frowned and shook her head. "My bruises are nothing in comparison to your eye and knuckles, and you can't really put a plaster on your eye like that."
There was a short pause before she spoke again as an idea came to her. Hopefully, this would help settle their little disagreement a bit. Hopefully. "Would it be okay if we both get help at the same time?"
"Oh- okay! Do we need the hospital...uh, the NHS centre?" Jan wracked his brains for other ideas. "Uhm, medical students?"
Reaching out to her, he stretched out his fingers. It was a "take my hand" gesture, the same he'd use on his many, many younger siblings. "Let's find somebody, okay?"
Sadhbh smiled and took his hand. "It depends. Do you have anywhere to be soon? If you still need to be in town, we can go to the NHS centre. The hospital will probably be a while. Or we can head to CSU's infirmary."
She knew she probably sounded older than she should be at the moment, but the priority was getting this boy treated.
He swung her hand a little, experimentally. "Can you go to the university? I don't want to trouble the public institutions."
He paused a little, unsure of whether the last part would insult her or not. "Ah, not to - uhm, I mean, so long as you aren't hurt too badly..."
Really, she was used to this by now, and it made sense, coming from a human's perspective, but sometimes, she couldn't help but want to laugh. She didn't laugh, though, because that would be rude and strange. After all, she did look like a very young teenager, and she knew it.
So what she did instead was swing his hand back and smiled up at him. "Don't worry. I'm a student at Countshire."
"I am too," Jan said, "uuuhh, politics!" Obviously she was not as young as he had first thought. He made a swinging gesture which his free hand. "I hope you do not - uhm, mind the- uh...hand-holding? I don't mean to-..."hit" on you. It is a...thing I do," awkward pause. "Uh...you know..."
He slipped his hand out of hers and instead put a hand on her neck, patting it gently before pulling away.
There was a pause and some blinking before Airmed broke out into cheerful laughter. "Don't worry! I don't mind it at all." She held out her hand for him to take back if he wanted. "And I didn't think you were hitting on me at all."
She was innocent and guileless, or maybe that was just what she wanted you to believe.
Jan hesitated at her outstretched hand, then put a hand between her shoulder blades instead, steering her. "It is fine."
"Okay," she said, accepting his answer and letting her hand fall to her side.
Upon reaching the infirmary, she insisted he go in to see a nurse or doctor first. "You should go in first." She gave him her most guileless look.
In secret, she just wanted to heal herself while he was being looked at.
Thirty minutes later, and the blood from his nose was cleaned up, and his knuckles were bandaged appropriately. He waved at her from the door as he left, "Hello! The doctor said I needed to find some ice for my eye. Do you need to go in?"
When he came out, Airmed had already healed herself but put on bandages for appearance's sake and was waiting for him.
"Nope!" she said. "I'm good. Do you want me to go get some ice for you?"
"No, no, it is fine!" He put up his hands to dissuade her. "Ah- um...what's your name?"
"I'm Sadhbh," she replied and then looked up at him curiously. "Are you sure you don't want me to get ice for you? I won't mind!"
"I am fine, I am fine. My name is Jan Joseph- um please call me either. My mother calls me Josef, but others call me Jan..." he rolled his shoulders. "Sorry, I babble a little sometimes. Do you need me to walk you back?"
"It's nice to meet you, Jan!"
Smiling, she shook her head. "I don't need you to walk me back, if you want to keep me company, I don't mind!"
Ah?" He didn't quite get it. "Um, I'll come along..." She didn't seem at all shaken by their experience; in fact, she appeared to have forgotten it completely. Perhaps it would hit her later?
"Ah...do you...have anyone to talk to?"
"Great!" She moved to exit the building and head toward her dorm.
"Yes, I do," she said. "I have my brother, my roommate, and other friends. Why?"
"No reason," he said, with a smile. "You are in Eir court, yes?"
"Yep!" she answered. She wouldn't pry even if she felt there was a reason.
Soon enough they were right outside the door. "Here you go, Sadhbh."
"Thanks," she said and gave his eye another cursory glance. "I hope to see you again and that your wounds heal soon."
"Thank you," he said with a smile, "you are kind. I hope you feel better soon too."
He gave her a wave as he walked off to his room. Perhaps Zander and Junbao would be impressed with his bruises?
