Davi
Renata
Happens after DeAngelo daddy starts getting sick and before he kicks the bucket.
Davi was pretty certain Ren would have eaten by now. But the premiere wouldn't begin for another two hours and long waits usually needed something to amuse the time. He'd gone to the store earlier in the day and picked up a pack of M&Ms (for sweets) and bag of chips (for salty). Hopefully one of the two choices would be acceptable...and pleasing?
He was dressed in a plain grey dress shirt underneath a dark wintercoat- the weather was still chilly if not cold and nightfall only meant it would be getting colder. Walking the hallway to her dorm room, he still felt a bit embarrassed being in the girl's dorm buildings. He stopped in front of her door, lifted a closed hand and knocked.
She didn't know whether she should still go or not. Her father was in the hospital, her brother was distraught, and here she was going to some stupid movie. Dithering in front of the mirror, staring at her half made-up face, Ren leaned forward to press her head against the glass. She hadn't cried once over the news. She didn't even fucking know what was wrong with him- he could have had a stroke or been shot or who knows what- and she couldn't squeeze out even one tear.
Somehow, she blamed her father for her own inability to cry over him.
Frustrated, she dragged on some red lipstick, frowned at her reflection and waited for Davi, sprawled out on her bed, lying on her stomach.
At the knock, she said, "Come in," without keeping all the anger out of her voice. "I mean, come on in," Ren corrected.
Fuck it. They'd have a good time. Fuck anyone for thinking she didn't care about her father. Fuck her for thinking it, too.
Davi hesitated for a second and then opened the unlocked door.
"Hey." He looked at her on the bed, lying there, and then turned and closed the door behind himself. He placed his bag on the floor by the bed before pulling her chair out from the desk and sitting on it.
"...What's wrong?" His voice was quiet and questioning. She didn't exactly look thrilled to be going to watch the movie.
She grunted and flipped over, suddenly smiling and shaking her head. "Nothing. Well, something. But I don't want to be a come-down tonight. I'll tell you later." Quickly, Ren got to her feet and grabbed her purse from the edge of the bed to stand beside Davi, one hand on his upper arm.
"Okay, you ready? I'm fucking ready!" She smiled again for good measure.
Davi wasn't exactly believing it, but cases like these were usually labeled "proceed with caution" by his department. Especially if said person was a female you didn't want to agitate. He'd gotten to know Ren a bit better in these last months but this was one of the first times he'd seen her act in such a moody way. He picked up his own bag and gave a smile back. He'd ask her later...or she would tell him when she was ready.
"Ready." He opened the door for her and let her go out first before closing it, waiting for her to lock it. The walk down to the parking area wasn't that bad, the two walking relatively close to one another. He wondered if he should take her hand. Too presumptuous? They'd never really declared being exclusive and Ren might take it as him being too "clingy".
"Let's roll!"
It was a little awkward, walking side by side like that, as she didn't know where they stood. It would have been a lie to say she didn't feel pleasantly sick when she thought about Davi, but then she wasn't exactly the world's best girlfriend. She'd ruin it as soon as things stopped being so uncertain, she was sure of it...
"Hey, so who's giving you that car again? They owe you a favor or something?" she smiled, tugging her purse back onto her shoulder. "Not that I'm complaining."
Hearing her voice jolted him out of his reflection. Turning his head to her, he nodded.
"I helped him with his conference presentation. He flew to the US yesterday to give a presentation on dementia patients and won't be back for a week. As thanks, he lent me the car." Given a bit of time, Davi thought he could save up enough money to use to buy his own car. Since he'd moved to England, he'd never really had any use for it. Buses, train, metro or walking was good enough. He even had a bike he used occasionally to get into town when he was in the mood for fresh air. But it'd be nice to have his own set of wheels to drive Ren around. Speaking of driving Ren...
"Were you still interested in going out on Sunday? Or tomorrow if it's a better day for you."
"Nah, Sunday's fine. I'm, you know," she laughed, rolling her eyes towards the sky, obviously at least a little embarrassed, "Looking forward to it." She was getting a haircut Saturday, besides. Maybe a new haircut would make her feel more capable of taking care of shit like this. Relationship shit. Flirting shit. Davi stuff. That was probably the best way to put it.
Slowing as they neared the aforementioned car, Ren put her hand on his upper-arm again, canting her head to the side. "So... let's wait a second, okay? I'm gonna have a cigarette." And try to work up the resolve to either mention her dad, or vow to leave him out of their entire night together.
Smoking wasn't exactly good for the body but neither was drinking or any numerous other things that Davi did as well so he tried not to say too much on the topic. Today, Ren seemed stressed though she was trying to hide it. There were more important matters at hand than preserving the health of her lungs right now, he decided.
"Alright. Let me put this in the car. He walked up and unlocked the dark blue sedan, placing the bag in the space between the driver and the passenger. Coming back out again, he watched her light the cigarette before moving to her side.
"Cold any? I have an extra jacket."
Taking a slow drag, she studied the lit end between her fingers, turning her wrist this way and that absently. There wasn't any point in telling him, right? It was better to just keep it inside, have a good time. If the old man was dying, there was nothing she could do about it. And she didn't owe him shit. Decidedly, Ren flicked the cigarette, sending a spray of ash to the pavement.
"A little, yeah," she mumbled, smiling slowly. "Can I wear that one?" She pointed to the one Davi was wearing now.
Davi smiled back after a second. He straightened a little and shrugged off the jacket, pulling the already warmed coat and set it down around Ren's shoulder. Tugging so the shoulders flattened down more, he let his hands smooth down the wool coat. He would do what he can for her.
"If you don't mind."
Staring out at him from under her lashes, head down, lips half-curled in a smirk around her cigarette, Ren stifled a few jolts of excitement. He was a good guy, he was really a good guy... Not some mafia suit or fake smile, an honestly, truly good person. She was just so elated to know that someone like him existed.
Twirling a little, her booted feet planted firmly on the ground as her gawky legs twisted around one another, Ren shrugged. "Thanks, Davi." Then she leaned forward, forcing as much nonchalance into the act as she could, and kissed him on the cheek.
He didn't blush, thank God, but he did warm a little inside. It'd been a while since he'd dated and he'd never considered himself the "good catch" type. Someone as sought after, as popular as Ren was had many choices when it came to guys. But there was something sweet about her big talk, about the way she tried to be cool. He liked that about her.
He left one arm on her shoulder, wrapped around, hand at her side, leaning in.
"Mm." He bent in after a thought, and looking into her face, her eyes with his gold flecked eyes, kissed her gently on the lips.
As he kissed her, Ren closed her eyes, leaned in a bit, free arm curled around herself and tucked under one side of his jacket. In a way, it was disappointing. They all kissed her, every last boy, but then... she was so happy that it was Davi doing it now that she didn't care. Holding her hand to the side of his face, then his neck, she faltered a bit trying to find something to hold on to.
"Hey," she said, half-laughing as she came out of the kiss, "I never said you could kiss me."
Davi pulled back for a second, eyes a bit alarmed, face a bit embarrassed. But he say her laugh and he relaxed, giving a small sheepish smile.
"Sorry. I was forward, wasn't I?"
Leaning in, she kissed the corner of his mouth gently, not caring about the smoke on her breath. "You were great," she whispered before turning away from him to lean on the side of the sedan. "Now let's shag ass."
Davi turned to open the car door for her to get in, waiting to close it after her.
"We should still be early. Let's hope the lines aren't terrible." He gave a reassuring smile.
"Eh, who cares."
She ducked in the car, smiling slyly at Davi all the while, warm inside his jacket. It even smelled like him.
If the movie sucked, if Zack Snyder butchered her favorite comic in the world, well, she'd still count this as one of the happiest nights of her life so far.
