I am increasingly disturbed by this place. Currently, I sit in a cafe, where, on the other side of the room, a shell-shocked looking man stares out with beady little eyes, occasionally talking to himself. This sounds like the kind of watering hole I'd like to dive into and watch people go by. Perhaps it's no coincidence that yours is the land of movie scripts and star power. What better inspiration for an action script than the prospect of a little gun violence around every corner? As a Canadian, I often wonder about traveling to places like New York, LA, Oakland. Places with genuine first world disparity, genuine slums, and genuine danger. This instead of the homeless Torontonians, who as long as they have a health card get OHIP (free health care), and where there are phony street people who claim to make a decent living panhandling from the socialist commuters of this fair land ( ... )

New York is actually pretty safe these days, compared to Oakland, some parts of LA, and many other American cities. (However, several New Jersey cities a stone's throw away, Camden and Newark, are some of the worst in the country).

As an acquaintance of mine said to me when we were driving through Philadelphia the other month, "There's a lot of anger in this country. It's very disturbing."
