It was the middle of the winter. New York was covered by a meter layer of sticky, dirty snow. The grit mixed with snow squelched under feet, impeding pedestrians and traffic.
But surprisingly, in the middle of all this bustle and mud, a small island of clean, diamond sparkling snow remained intact. It surrounded a small lot, used for the ice skating rink. The children’s laughter and light jazz music could be heard there all day long. The Skating Rink was open late into the night. It was usually empty after midnight.
It was almost half past eleven and the workers were planning to leave early, when two men appeared, heading to the rink.
“Mac… Are you sure this is a good idea?” - one man spoke with uncertainty.
“Relax, Danny. This isn’t us fighting crime” - the other man said. The first man’s nervousness seemed funny to the older man.
The couple reached the entrance. The older man paid for the tickets and they got into the Rink
“Mac I don’t know how to skate” -Danny stammered staring at the shimmering blue ice, Mac came closer to his lover and smoothed his bristling hair.
“I’ll teach you. Do you trust me?” - he asked looking into Danny’s midnight blue eyes. He just nodded.
Mac had put on the skates quickly and was, now waiting for Danny to cope with this task. It was rather cold and Danny had left his gloves somewhere so his hands were feeling the cold. Mac squatted down before him and took Danny’s hands in his trying to warm them. Danny pursed his lips and looked at his supervisor.
“Mac…”
Taylor just shook his head.
At last they stepped onto the ice and Danny plopped down immediately. Mac tried to lift him up but lost balance himself and fell down near Danny. They both burst out with laughter.
”Yeah, Mac you really know how to skate” - Danny snapped, getting up and shaking snow off.
”I’m not sure about anything round you”, - Taylor answered jokingly.
Gradually Danny learnt how to hold himself on the ice. But from time to time Mac had to secure him, and it turned out not to be in vain. Having overestimated his abilities, Danny tried to jump and fell right in Mac’s arms.
”Well, Messer, you are like a child” - he hemmed not letting Danny go. He just shrugged his shoulders helplessly:”But you like it, don’t you?”
Mac gave a tiny smile and nodded. Then he bent forward and kissed Danny. Having had enough of skating, they headed to their favorite café, where hot mulled wine was served.
“You know what?” - Danny said thoughtfully, - “Sometimes it seems to me that all is happening to me… to us it’s just a dream”
A hint of sadness flashed in his eyes. Mac put his hand on Danny’s shoulder and squeezed it gently.
“The most important thing is it will never end”
