It took Jo longer than she ever wanted to admit to realize that Mac, Danny and Don were in a relationship together. She wanted to believe it was because they were just that good at keeping their private life separate from their professional, but still felt that she should have noticed earlier than she did.

“How long have they been together?” she asked Sid casually one day over drinks after work.

“The guys?” Sid asked, not looking over to where the three were still waiting for their own drinks. “Five years now? Almost six, maybe?”

Jo had promptly choked at the answer. “What?” That she hadn’t been expecting.

“They haven’t been together the entire time, of course,” Sid went on as if what he was saying was nothing unusual. “They had some commitment issues in the beginning. Sheldon knows more than I do.”

“Sheldon knows what?” Hawkes asked, setting a plate of wings on the table before sitting down with his beer.

“The entire story behind Mac, Danny and Don,” Sid answered.

“Ah. You finally figured it out,” Hawkes said, giving Jo a wide smile. He held his hand out and, with an exaggerated sigh, Sid handed him ten dollars.

“You were betting on this?” Jo asked in disbelief. “How many other people were in on it?”

“No one else knows,” Hawkes promised her.

“About the bet or about the three of them?” Jo asked, nodding toward the three guys.

“Both.”

“How did I miss it? It’s so obvious.” Now that she knew what she was looking for, it was impossible to unsee the bond between the three men. Danny leaned closer to Don than friendship strictly dictated and the smile Mac gave them was one she had never seen before, private and full of love.

“It’s not something you go looking for,” Sid answered. “Between two of them, maybe.”

“But not all three,” she finished. “Wow … I never would have guessed that Mac would be involved in a threesome.”

“What’s wrong with three?” Sid asked. “Three makes sure there’s support when needed. When one falls, two are there to catch them. You see three legged stools but never two-legged - three is more stable.”

She raised an eyebrow. “Should I be looking for evidence of another threesome?” she asked, lips quirking up in an amused smile even as she sipped her beer. She looked over at Hawkes. “One with both of you, maybe?”

Hawkes laughed and shook his head. “Despite what Sid says, I’m very happy in my boring two-person relationship.”

She chuckled in amusement. “Sid said they’ve been on and off?”

“They’re on now,” Hawkes told her. “According to Mac, this time they’re not going anywhere.”

“He just told you that?” Jo asked as she tried to imagine Mac just blurting something like that out.

Hawkes shrugged. “I might have asked.” He grinned when Jo raised an eyebrow in disbelief. “It might have been at the Christmas after-party and someone might have slipped him a spiked apple cider … or three.”

“Were you that someone?”

“Of course not,” Hawkes said, sounding insulted.

“I wasn’t asking you,” Jo informed him, her gaze on Sid.

“I have no idea what you could be talking about,” Sid said, but his amusement was clear.

“What’s changed this time?” she asked after a few moments, letting that matter drop. She turned her head slightly to observe the other three men. They were engrossed in a game a darts; Danny and Don were, at least, she amended. Mac seemed content to lean against the table and watch.

“They’ve been through a lot,” Hawkes answered after a few moments. “Don lost Jess, Danny went through hell with Lindsay and that fall out, Mac … well, they’ve been through a lot and not just with our jobs.”

“It made them stronger,” Sid took over. “Personally I think it showed them to see what was truly important.”

“And what’s that?”

“Love.”

“Love?” she repeated.

He nodded. “Real love. It’s what’s worth fighting for even when things are hard.”

“They’re lucky then,” she murmured, thinking about her decision about fighting for love. She looked up to see Mac watching her and raised her beer, smiling. He looked surprised but nodded in acknowledgement while giving her his patented half-smile. Message given and received. They had an ally in her.

End.
