"Why don't you accept their offer Mac?" Stella asked him curiously as she took a sip of her lemonade.
"What?" he asked, his brow wrinkling in confusion as he turned away from what he'd been watching and looked at her.
"Their offer. You really should accept it," she told him, gesturing toward what had captured his attention.
He blushed and looked away, "I don't know what you're talking about."
"They'd be good for you. You'd be good for them," she said. He remained silent. "Everyone thinks so. Lindsay, Hawkes, and I were just talking about it yesterday."
He choked on the hotdog he'd just taken a bite of. "What?!" he gasped around coughs.
She smirked, "I'm kidding. They have no idea. Yet."
"What do you mean yet?" he asked suspiciously.
She laughed and patted his arm, "I'm not going to say anything. They're good CSIs. They're going to figure it out."
"There's nothing to figure out." He couldn't help but let his gaze be drawn back to what they were talking about. What had made him think that attending the annual picnic was a good idea?
"Well, there should be," she told him sternly. She watched the two shirtless men playing basketball. "I'd jump them if I could." She smirked at his reaction.
His head whipped toward her, his eyes narrowing. "What?" he demanded.
"I thought you didn't want them," she teased, but gave in almost immediately. "Relax, I have Marty and I'm perfectly happy. But that doesn't mean I can't enjoy the sight," What woman wouldn't enjoy watching Danny and Don playing basketball? Besides, it was still a great thing to see Don up and moving again. "You should take a chance and go for it Mac."
He watched her carefully for a long moment before nodding and looking back at the game. He smiled as Danny wrapped himself around Don, causing the taller detective to stumble and allowing him to steal the ball. "I can't Stella," he said quietly after several minutes.
"Why?" she asked.
"I just can't."
"That's ridiculous," she snapped. "You deserve to be happy and they can make you happy."
He shook his head, that's where she was wrong. "I failed Claire Stella. I can't. What if I fail them? I couldn't stand to go through that again."
"You did not fail Claire," Stella told him sternly. "There was nothing you could have done. Nothing. You can't blame yourself for something that no one could have predicted. And you won't fail them."
"How can you know that?"
"You saved Don," she pointed out. "Something that I know Danny thinks about every day."
"That's another thing, they're happy together, who am I to mess with that?"
She snorted in laughter. "Who are you? You're the one that they've invited to join them." He looked at her in surprise and she shrugged, "I talk to them too, you know."
He thought about it before shaking his head again, "We're friends Stella. I don't want to lose that. I can't lose that."
"Don and Danny were friends first too," she pointed out.
"I don't know, Stella. I want to, but...." he trailed off.
"You worry that you might fail them? With our jobs, we know the possibilities, won't you feel better if something does happen and you have years of happy memories to look back on? It might not be them that something happens to, you're not completely invulnerable, even if it sometimes seems that way. Don't they deserve to have those good times to look back upon too?"
"Maybe," he conceded.
They both watched as Don and Danny made their way to their picnic table under the tree.
"Hey," Don greeted them with a smile.
"Game over already?" Stella asked.
"Someone here got tired," Danny teased with a smile at Don. He gently bumped his shoulder against Don's arm and pushed him toward the bench. "I'm going to get something to drink, anyone want anything?" he asked.
"Actually, I was just going for more lemonade," Stella said, draining the last of her own glass. "I'll get it, you sit," she stood and pushed Danny toward the bench too. "Take it one day at a time," she whispered in Mac's ear before heading for the beverage table.
Mac waited until she was a few feet away before he took a deep breath . Stella was right, he should take a chance. "About that thing the two of you suggested...."
Stella looked back toward the three men as she poured cups of lemonade. Mac had a small pleased smile on his face. Don's smile was huge, showing just how truly happy he was. Danny's back was to her, but he was moving animatedly, giving away his own feelings.
She smiled as she moved off to talk to the others for a few minutes. She'd give them a few minutes before rejoining them and telling them that she was right. She was just happy that they'd finally made that final step. She had a feeling that things were going to be just fine now.
End.
