On the couch, Lindsay and Danny's apartment, late Friday evening.

Jun 30, 2006 22:46

Stretched out on the couch, Lindsay fingered the keypad on her phone. She'd been itching to talk to Kaile for a while. Glancing at her watch, she noted that Danny would probably be stuck on that case for a while longer and decided to give her a call ( Read more... )

Kaile woke up on the second ring, reaching for her phone on autopilot and flicking it open halfway through the third ring.

Not dispatch.

Of course not, because she wasn't on call tonight. She blinked at her phone, the rust of adrenaline ebbing away, returning when the caller ID filtered through the haze of sleep.

"Lindsay? Hey!"

Lindsay smiled widely when she heard Kaile's voice. "Hey, pretty girl. How are you? I didn't wake you up, did I?"

"You did, actually," Kaile said, stifling a yawn against the back of her hand. It'd been a long day, and she'd only been in bed for - she glanced at the clock - an hour and fifteen minutes. It'd been a while since she last talked to Lindsay, though, so she wasn't about to tell her to call back later.

"Don't worry about it. Everything okay?"

Damn. Lindsay hadn't expected to catch her asleep. "I'm sorry, Kai. I figured you'd still be up, thought I was the only one working the dayshift," she said, biting her lip.

"Things are okay. Good, yeah. Just, you know, sort of missed you."

"You couldn't have known," Kaile said, smiling a little at the old nickname. She'd never been able to get Lindsay to drop that, much as she loathed it.

"Good. That you're good, I mean- I miss you too," and god, she was babbling now. Talking to the ex-girlfriend on the phone after pitifully little sleep? Maybe not the best plan ever. She rolled over, sat up, swinging her legs over the edge of the bed. Coffee might help, but then she wouldn't be getting any sleep for sure.

"I'm sorry, Kaile. You always did hate it when I'd call you that," she said, smirking slightly.

Okay, so maybe she smiled a little when Kaile said she missed her. "Things are good, yeah. I mean, work, Danny, all that stuff." Lindsay tugged at a lock of her hair. "How are you?"

Kaile could almost hear Lindsay smile. "You never let that stop you before," she said, smiling back.

"I still can't believe you're dating Danny," Kaile said, and okay, this was definitely the last time she was talking to anyone right after waking up. She paused, but Lindsay didn't yell at her or hang up, so she continued. "I'm doing alright. Still spending too much time at the precinct, of course, though you wouldn't know from the mountain of paperwork on the edge of my desk." And I'm seeing someone.

For as long as it lasts.

That just made Lindsay grin a little wider. "No, it didn't."

She laughed. "You're not the only one. Trust me, I've heard it from everyone. Flack, Stella, Hawkes, even Mac. But, he's different, you know? I mean, he's not the Danny that you know." Lindsay bit her lip. What the hell, she thought. "You should come up here, see for yourself."

Kaile 'hmm'ed, entertaining visions of Danny in an apron, and trying hard not to giggle. She wanted to believe Lindsay, but she'd worked with Danny for four years, and saying he didn't strike her as the settling-down type was understating it.

Even when she had metal rods sticking out of her arm, he'd still tried to get into her pants. (He might even have succeeded, if she'd actually taken the prescribed Vicodin.)

"I don't know," she said, "I might need living proof of that. But then I've seen what you've done to Don." She had urge to wink, even if she knew Lindsay couldn't see her.

"Hey," Lindsay protested cheerfully. "What do you mean, 'what I've done to Don'? I haven't done anything to him!"

Kaile laughed. "You wore him out, is what you did."

Blushing furiously, Lindsay bit her lip. "That was ... shut up, Kaile," she said with a very embarrassed giggle.

Time to change the subject, yes? "So, Kaile, what are the odds of you coming for a visit? I mean, my parents are coming to visit, so it couldn't be then, but really, I'd love to see you, and I know Danny would too." And there she goes, rambling again. What was she nervous about, hm? Seeing her ex, maybe?

Kaile laughed even harder. She hadn't gotten the whole story out of Don - unsurprisingly, he hadn't been very eager to share the details of his trip to Towers - but she'd heard enough to put the pieces together. After all, she did get paid to read between the lines.

Kaile pulled an old T-shirt over her head and got up, giving up on sleep for the time being. "I don't know," she said, "I'd love to, if I can get the time off." That could be interesting. Maybe not quite as interesting as Don's visit, but still.

If there was a right moment to tell the ex about the new girlfriend, this probably wasn't it, but Kaile suddenly couldn't not tell her. They were still friends, after all.

"I'm- kinda seeing someone, by the way," she said, and she hoped it didn't sound as awkward to Lindsay as it did to her.

She'd smack Kaile with a pillow if she was within reach. But, she wasn't, so Lindsay made a face at the phone. "You know, you're lucky I like you, Maka. Train ride to New York isn't that long," she teased.

Lindsay bit her lip. "Seeing someone? Good for you." Hopefully she didn't sound as bothered by it as she was, which really, was silly. She was in love with Danny, and had no right to be upset that Kaile was dating. Moving on. Still hurt a little bit, though. "Is she, does she get the Job? Doesn't matter, really, as long as you're happy. Are you happy?"

"Should I be worried?" Kaile asked, teasingly.

Kaile nodded, realising too late that Lindsay couldn't see that. "She's-" thousands of ways to finish that sentence: tall, a journalist, nothing at all like you; she settled for "lovely. She tries to understand, but you know how these things go..." she trailed off. Did Lindsay know? She'd kind of made a habit of dating coworkers. Good riddance, maybe. "I'm happy, yeah." Could be happier, but Lindsay doesn't need to know it all.

"I don't know, should you?" Lindsay laughed.

Nodding, she played with the fringe on a pillow. "That's all that matters, then. If she's the right one, then she'll understand eventually. I don't know. Maybe that's why I date people I work with. Got tired of the 'how do you stand it? How can you be around dead bodies every day? Doesn't it ever get to you?' questions. You know?"
