Our economy- I don't get it

I must admit that I am ever so confused as to how we have gotten so far into debt, as a nation. As individuals, sure, too many people are buying ridiculous big screen TVs on credit cards that they shouldn't have been given in the first place, but as a country? Perhaps I'm seeing the trees and failing to see the forest we're occupying for $10 billion per month.
They're saying that $1 million isn't what it used to be. Huh. One million dollars would pay off my mortgage, my student loans, replace my 10 year old car, add to my savings, and allow me to help my father pay for my sisters' college educations... and give 50% of it to the federal government in taxes. What is it in your tax bracket?
