Why didn't I think of CHRESTOMANCI??? And PRYDAIN???
To be fair, I did think of American Gods, but I'd heard they WERE making it into a series, so I forbore to mention it. And I thought of Book of the New Sun, too, but I'd already mentioned ONE sci-fi series, which was Bujold's and I didn't want to go off the subject, but I'm SO GLAD someone else thought to mention it.
AND! I got in a word for Morlock Ambrosius, as I always must. They were lucky I didn't start rhyming again out of sheer glee.
