The weather around here has been teasing us recently. 80 degree days in April are not necessarily good. If May is too hot, the cool weather plants aren't going to do well, and it's not going to gain me much because I still can't put out the more picky plants without risking them (since there's still too high a chance of frost then).
The kid wants me to grow everything. And I have to laugh when I hear people say things like young kids' attention spans for such things as gardening is limited--he's the one checking on our seedlings each day and telling me what's growing and what's dry, and he's the one trying to figure out exactly what we're going to do with everything. Maybe he can keep me on the ball about getting everything watered each day this summer.
I've also been investigating some other possibilities. My garden beds, even combined, are actually a pretty small area of space. That's why I've mainly avoided things like squash in the past--even if I planted it on the edges and let it grow out into the grass, it's still a lot of space and it makes it complex to cut the grass. But I've found a lot of information about growing squash types in large pots or buckets on patios recently. We have many drywall mud buckets down in the basement.
This weekend, I will probably put out the asparagus crowns I bought, although I'm still not 100% sure what area of the garden is going to be dedicated to these things for the next decade or so. And looking forward at the weather, I might direct-sow some greens, carrots and radishes. I have seeds coming out of my ears, so it's not a big problem if it turns cold and the seeds rot instead of sprouting.
