back to school!

Finally have both the kids back to school this week. Three weeks is a long time for kids to kick around at home when they don't have friends living close by--the joys of living in suburban L.A. and going to a magnet school. We did make several treks across town for play dates, but it bums me out to have to spend so much time in the car just so the kids can do basic hanging-out stuff. I am so ready to move to somewhere where we can live in an actual neighborhood.

We took the tree down and put all the decorations away on Saturday. I made all the trips to and from the garage in bare feet because the weather is just beautiful. Wrong, but beautiful!

The girl captured a scary bug in her room under a glass and gave it to me to take outside a few days ago. She still screamed a bug! a bug! a bug! aaaaaahhhhh!!! while she was catching it, but this is still a HUGE BIG DEAL and MUCH BETTER THAN THE ALTERNATIVE!!! My baby is getting all grown up... *g* She also ate her gardenburger without picking out the mushrooms. Very big emotional growth spurt happening here, folks.

We've (temporarily, at least) foiled the cat in her habit of shaking the security gates at night until we let her in (I don't mind getting up once, say, to let her in or out, but she would like to come in for a quick snack about every 90 minutes all night long, which is not cool). We slipped poster paper in over the metal mesh that she grabs with her claws, so she can't get a grip. I've managed to sleep through the night four days in a row for the first time since we got back from visiting my parents. Bliss.

Now I have the domestic equivalent of a weekend bender hangover facing me: a very dirty kitchen (including all of the pots and pans, naturally) and about five loads of laundry to put away... Blech. At least I have some podcasts to listen to... I can probably justify having lunch first, though, right?
