192 - Flying Burrito Brothers - Gilded Palace of Sin

I have read for years how the Flying Burrito Brothers created the template for The Eagles' version of country rock. That was enough for me to decide I could skip the FBB. Hey, I enjoy the occasional spin of The Eagles' Greatest Hits Vol 1, but had no interest in listening to other, similar artists. I now know that there is too much of a difference between FBB and The Eagles. People really need to stop that comparison. The only song that I thought was close enough to what I know of the Eagles was “Do Right Woman.”

With that off my chest, I must confess that I really enjoyed Gilded Palace of Sin. Gram and the band did a great job of taking the sound of country from about 10-15 years previous when country/boogie/blues/rocknroll were still part of the same musical stew...and then adding contemporary rock and pop flourishes and inflections. Shoot, the first time I heard “Hot Burrito #2,” I thought that Spotify had somehow switched over to playing a country-influenced Todd Rundgren song.

Songs I Knew I Liked: None

Songs I Now Like: “Christine's Tune (Devil in Disguise),” “Hot Burrito #1,” and “Hot Burrito #2”

Songs I Don't Want to Ever Hear Again: I can see how if/when I get this album that “Hippie Boy” will likely end up being periodically skipped.
