Starlight Express...WHY?!
I enjoy the occational musical but am not completely obsessed with them. I enjoy playing them when I am in a a band or wind symphony because they are fun. I was listening to an advertising for Andrew Loyde Webber's musical 'Starlight Express' which is playing in some theater here in Boston. What the hell was he thinking when he wrote these lyrics?...
Song 1, some young guy singing, "Starlight express, starlight express, are you real? yes or no?"
Song 2, some young girl singing, "Next time you fall in love it had better be with me."
Add simple major chord progressions, resolve them, and lots of vibrato, and presto! you have Starlight Express, the musical! For a composer and writer whom I think is talented and very successful, he must have some people fooled if they think this is good? I think I'll avoid Starlight Express and stick to good ol' Phantom of the Opera.
