If you haven't already noticed, I'm currently on a Fantastic Children high. I may very well remain that way until the new Juushin Enbu chapter comes out.
Anyway, by now I have quite a bit of power at Anime Club by the very fact that I've introduced tons of great anime to them in the past two years. I brought Nodame Cantabile to the marathon last weekend and they played it just because they trusted my judgement that it was good. (And of course, everyone did like it. Yay!)
However, I've found that some anime are more difficult to introduce to people than others. Fantastic Children is one of them. Some of the reasons are:
-The title. It just sounds so silly. Everyone keeps making fun of it and thinking it's some superhero show. "So what's it about?" "Obviously, children who are fantastic."
-The story itself is hard to describe. For Kino's Journey I could sum it up in one sentence, but for Fantastic Children it's difficult to come up with a summary without spoiling things, especially considering the element of mystery was what I found most appealing the first time I watched it. I usually just hand over the DVD to people and tell them to read the back cover.
-The first few episodes are kinda slow. Though now that I've rewatched the series and can see that nearly every scene was carefully planned and means something, I have to admit that it takes some patience to get into it. A lot of people don't have that patience. It's rather telling that only action/comedy series have been winning in the Regular Meetings and that Fantastic Children is the first serious show with a complex plot that we're watching this year. (Weiss Kruez and Fushigi Yuugi DO NOT COUNT.)
-The art style. Honestly, I don't think it's that bad, I hardly even notice it now. Dumas still looks hot anyway. But it does turn people off at first and makes them think the show is childish.
-Half the main cast is 11 years old. Nevermind the fact that their backstories go back hundreds of years. *sigh*
-Helga. I don't think that needs an explanation.
But despite all that, I think people were pretty into it by the end of the meeting last night. (Well, I saw Dan and Kevin talking together, so they were either discussing it or got bored.) But Alex, Dirk, and Cory didn't even give it a try. :/
