86 Volume 13 Live Read Reactions/Summary/Translations (Chapter 3)
Here I've compiled my live read reactions and translation summaries from the Volume 13 Spoilers thread on the 86 Discord server, with minimal editing/additions. Obviously, MAJOR SPOILERS FOR VOLUME 13. You have been warned.
Chapter 3
The news programs are saying stuff like they should catch the Actaeon/fawns and dispose of them now :LenaDeadInside:
Poor Miel is listening to all this on the radio
Raiden says the news programs now are just like how it was back in the Republic at the beginning of the war, and Shiden notes that since Raiden wasn’t taken to the camps, he probably saw more of that than the other Eighty-Six
Oh my lord the Federacy is tearing itself apart. How is this going to be resolved?!?!? :AnjuShook:
Dear isn't contagious, but now the citizens have become convinced that it's contagious and spread by proximity to the Legion, so victims of the bombing, their families, soldiers, and refugees are all now 'infected' and are being hunted down
Chitori confesses to Yuuto that the reason the Actaeon/fawns didn't come out and tell the Federacy about all this or ask for help is because they were afraid they would be locked up in a laboratory again and killed or experimented on :sniffsniff:

Shin understands all the reasons why it's best for Lena to be held back from the front lines, both to maintain the military's order and for her own safety. But her wishes are being ignored and her freedom is being robbed and all he can do is watch. If it weren't for his responsibilities as commander, he'd go get her right away...and he hates himself for always thinking about his responsibilities and being unable to go save her
Ernst still hasn't been mentioned yet in this volume and that scares me
Oh Dustin is suffering
Dustin realizes he can't even understand the route Yuuto decided on and he doesn't have the skills to go find them
Lots of self hatred building
He literally can't even if he decided to. There's nothing he can do to help and he realizes that he's just all talk :sniffsniff:

Dustin responds “You’re saying that? It’s not even any of your business, Anju.” He knows she could take him there, because she’s strong, and it feels like she’s shoving his weakness in his face. “I’ve had enough witch’s curses. Leave me alone.”

She was willing to betray Shin and the others for you, fool!!!!

Holy shit I love Henry
Henry finds a company of soldiers forcing some child soldiers onto a minefield while laughing. Henry's like "WTF are you doing?!" The soldiers are like "It's just a prank. And besides, they're different colored." Henry says he's going to report them and they point out he's a Republic citizen. Henry basically explodes at them and goes into a long rant that they should stop because they will regret it for the rest of their lives, and he knows because he regrets abandoning his family
Finally the soldiers back off and say they won't do it anymore. The child soldiers come back, but when they do, they hurl a slur at Henry
Goddamn I love this volume
Everything from Volumes 11 & 12 are coming together and I LOVE IT
This scene with Shin and Olivia is SO GOOD :FredShine:
Shin confides in Olivia. He really sounds like a lost child here and it breaks my heart
He explains his dilemma and asks what should he have done? When you stop being a child...does that mean you can't move the way you want to anymore?
Olivia is blunt. "Yes." Becoming an adult means you have things to protect, you have more responsibilities, you can't live just for yourself, and you won't be the only one who is sacrificed for your choices
Shin remembers Richard's sacrifice, the example he set. What Richard told him back then. Olivia says that Shin is unable to move right now because he is correctly assessing the situation and feeling responsibility.
Olivia reminds him of the previous operation, and how sometimes there is no best option. You can only choose the least worst option. Shin remembers the Hail Mary Regiment and realizes that he can relate to them now
The scene ends with Olivia suggesting they spar to let off steam, but he's not as adept at hand-to-hand so he'll bring Raiden too. Shin says Raiden isn't enough. So Raiden brings in the priest to spar with him. Shin feels faint :LenaKEKW:
I did not expect the book to go into so much detail on that sparring match :LenaKEKW:
During the sparring match, Shin fights Raiden, Shiden, Claude and Tooru (also Marcel got dragged in but he was defeated immediately) all at once and when he wins, they demand he treat them to a drink. Shin is like “Really? You want me to make you tea?” and he was planning to use cornstarch instead of sugar. Rito notes that that could actually make a nice tea-flavored jelly snack, but of course in Shin’s hands it wouldn’t turn out that way

Checking in with the Northern Front again. Vyov continues to be radicalized. Crazy rumors about nuclear weapons and the leviathan and the Fleet Countries people are spreading, as they seek someone to blame. Yes, THIS SHIT ISN'T OVER :FredDed:

YATRAI CAME TO MEET LENA. And he immediately makes me angry because he snaps at Jonas and calls him a dog :FredREEE:
He snapped because he used his Nouzen powers to suddenly appear in the doorway like a ghost and Jonas was understandably like "Lord Nouzen?" and Yatrai was like "Who said you could speak." Classist shit
Lena is very glad Shin is nothing like him :LenaKEKW:
I have mixed feelings about Yatrai now but I still find him really interesting
Also there's a proposal in the Federacy's congress to conscript the refugees and Lena was having flashbacks to everything Jerome told her :LenaDeadInside:
Yatrai wants to hear Lena's perspective on all this for future reference. This is turning into an interesting discussion about democracy and human nature 👀

Lots of fucked up incidents happening in the Federacy right now, but the one that breaks my heart the most is a former serf soldier in the Northern Front tried to protect one of those refugee kids that were rescued in Volume 12 and he was killed by another Federacy soldier

Because refugees and anyone who defends them must be "infected"
Also I'm really worried for Henry right now. I hope he didn't just die off screen :AnjuShook:
And now soldiers are fleeing. The Legion see that all the Federacy's fronts are on the verge of collapse. Now they're sending in heavy armored units to break through
HOW DO YOU SOLVE THIS? WHAT? IS THE FEDERACY DONE FOR? WHAT??
I swear this is the most high stakes volume yet. We are witnessing societal collapse and now the Legion are breaking through :DaiyaWeep:
The fear and paranoia among the troops is at such a level now that they see their own comrades as possible enemies, “infected” or new self-propelled mines
Now soldiers are killing each other as they flee :DaiyaWeep:
Survival instinct. If you see everyone around you fleeing and see some huge Legion tanks coming your way…
And it spreads, and spreads, and spreads
And the fleeing soldiers get in the way of fighting soldiers and just make them a big target for the Legion
The Federacy military is collapsing. Now they have to move the front lines to the production territories, where all the farms and production plants are...it's an act of suicide, but it's their only choice
CRAZY BONES DIVISION IS MOVING OUT YESSSSS
The Strike Package is being ordered out, even though Lena isn’t back yet. Shin says “I understand. Because I’m a soldier and an Eighty-Six.” But the whole time, his emotions scream to betray the Federacy, because they betrayed him first. That he shouldn’t forgive betrayal, but fight against it. And for the first time, he thinks the name ‘Eighty-Six’ is annoying

The Federacy tries to evacuate Vika and Zashya, but Zashya says Vika is out and won't abandon his comrades, so she'll evacuate alone
Also Zashya confirmed to be a princess 👀

Thinking back over what I've read while eating breakfast, I'm really in disbelief that the Federacy has been pushed this far. Like it's believable, it's been built up, but it's not something that can be solved easily. Giad's reckoning is here :LenaDisgust:
I really wonder if Operation Overlord is still possible at this point
Also it makes total sense how No Face could come up with this strategy, he studied up on Giad's weaknesses when he was in the military and he's seen this all happen firsthand in the Republic
Vaclav went from trying to stop this kind of thing from happening to making it happen himself
Also Dustin realizing he was all talk reminded me of Vaclav too
Except Vaclav never got to make that realization
Oh man, Frederica told Kurena about Dustin & Anju's argument

Kurena thinks they should give Dustin the same punishment Lena got when she first came to the base, except this time they would dump paint on him

Dustin was literally looking for an excuse to run into the battlefield and die
Jeez, they're telling the Republic refugees to evacuate, but the Federacy can't afford to give them transport this time so they have to just walk

Some of the Federacy's reserve troops passing by the Republic refugees tried to force them to fight instead, children and all. But a group of Republic volunteer soldiers were coincidentally nearby, and some of the refugees for some reason had firearms, so they fought back
I can't exactly blame the Republic refugees for this one

Primevere and the Bleachers escaped detention, stormed Ernst's house, took him hostage, and are now declaring independence :rowlet_wait:
Someone clearly helped them escape, provided them with all these firearms, and told them Ernst's residence. The New Dynasty Faction maybe???
I've gotta say, if they had to found a New Republic of San Magnolia, maybe it would have been smart to take over an area that isn't currently being overrun by Legion :AnjuFacepalm:
I do hope Miel and the other orphans have gotten out of there already. Move those little legs!
