I am astonished to see that the Kerry camp is claiming a straight sweep of the debates. I agree that he won the first one, but the second, in my opinion, was a tie, and I think that the polls back this up. In an ABC poll 47% think Kerry won, 44% think Bush won, and there was a 4.5% margin of error. That's what is called a statistical dead-heat. I ( Read more... )

It was not out of line for Kerry to mention Mary Cheney. It fit with the question asked, which was "Do you believe homosexuality is a choice?". Kerry said that if you ask Mary Cheney, who is a lesbian, she'll tell you she is who she was born to be. Those who are outraged by this should also take a look at Alan Keyes comments in which he specific demeaned her on purpose calling her a "selfish hedonist".

Had Mary Cheney's sexual orinetation been a secret, yes it would have been something to be ashamed of. Mary Cheney has been openly gay for years, and worked as a gay community liason for coors brewing.

As for Kerry's quote, "Well, I guess the president and you and I are three examples of lucky people who married up." He is doing several things effectively here. First, he is taking head-on those that say he married for money or that she is too outspoken or any of that. It isn't an issue any more. Second, the presidents reaction was that he felt he had been insulted by suggesting he married up to Laura. Laura is more popular than W right now,and this might help to remind people that they are voting for

nospinchris's reply to jamesfus's post about the debate discredits your first counter very well -- I'll let what he said stand.

Kerry's statement about "marrying up" was about as effective as your second counter, that is: not at all. Was your second point supposed to make sense? It didn't. Would you like to provide some kind of support for any of your conjectures? I don't see how Kerry trying to make a joke about marrying for money (judging by the audience's reaction), it didn't go over well. About the President "marrying up" to Laura Bush and her being more popular, you made no sense whatsoever. I feel like I've read the first and last sentences of a paragraph, but not the middle.
