Turkey Day & Christine's Visit

Hello my fellow Americans...

I haven't updated in a while, and this may be one of the last while I'm across the pond. I'm home in two weeks from tomorrow!! Hooray!!

Christine came to visit for a week last week and we had a great time. She arrived on Saturday, so we took her around to the National Gallery and Trafalgar Square. We had some lunch in the St. Martins-in-the-Fields Cafe (big church in Trafalgar Square) and then we decided to go home and relax because Christine has been up all night on the plane. The next day, we went to this placed called the Church. Basically, some Australians came up with the idea to get completely wasted on Sunday during the hours you would normally be in church. So every Sunday from 12-3:30 this forum place turns into The Church and people dress up in costumes, wait outside in line for an hour and are just generally nuts and most of the time drunk by the time they get there. We weren't really sure what to expect, but from the line alone we knew it was going to be a good time. They gave us this card for three drinks (we had to pay for it of course) when we got inside, so once we entered we went to the bar. I asked for Foster's, because it was an Australian place after all, and they gave me all three at once---in a plastic bag. We look around and people have numerous plastic bags tied to their waists and it's just crazy. So we settled along a railing to wait for the show to start. This comedian came up and was making fun of all types of people (Australians, New Zealanders, South Africans, Zimbabwe-ans, Canadians, Americans (of course!) He was pretty funny...and then they played American music for most of the time. Like 90's era American music. It was great. And then...there were strippers. I knew that there was a possibility of this, but I didn't realize that a girl would legitimately get naked and give herself a spongebath on stage. We made a good joke of it, and luckily my friends weren't too scared. The second stripper was way better because she did magic tricks, haha. A couple of the other girls met up with us later, and then we all had a fun mid-day drunken ride home on the tube. It was great. Good times had by all.

Then, I had to work Mon-Weds so Christine did her own thing which I can't really recap. Thursday was Thanksgiving day!! We had been preparing for this for a while, with numerous grocerty store visits and calls home to figure out how to cook. We stupidly invited 18 people over to the flat for our celebration, way more than any of us had ever cooked for in our lives. Amanda did a great job of organizing the whole thing, and when it came to cooking Christine and I kind of took over. I did my usual freaking out about the chicken and turkey (yes, we did roasting chickens because we could not find a full turkey in this looney little country) not cooking, etc. When it all was said and done however, everything turned out pretty well and I'm happy to say that I think I can cook!!

Friday, Christine and I went on a bus tour to Bath and Stonehenge. It was freezing!! I had already been to Bath so we went through the Roman baths, walked around a bit and then took sanctuary inside a coffee shop until we had to meet at the bus. Stonehenge was AMAZING. We came up this hill on the bus, and there it was on the right hand side of the road...like right there. It was so close to the road. I couldn't believe it. We got out and were able to walk all around it in this huge circle with an audio guide explaining the theories. I took tons of pictures from all angles of it, and then the sun went down and I got some awesome shots of shadows and light coming through the stones. It was a great time for me because Stonehenge was something I really wanted to see ever since I was little and looking at my grandmother's photos from England.

And on Saturday, Christine went home. :( It was great to have her, and I think she had a good time!
