i spent my sunday evening drinking coffee and studying at a local cafe. while i was there i couldn't help but notice the interaction taking place behind me. a young man had approached a young woman by the window to ask her about the book she was reading. (which happened to be a book about which foods to eat during particular parts of the lunar cycle. surprisingly, he also shared her interest.) a conversation ensued and they spent several minutes together. when it was time for him to leave, he asked her if she lived locally and when she said she did, he said he hoped to see her around. all the while it was obvious he was dancing around the idea of asking her for a way to contact her. he said his goodbyes, left the cafe, and got into his car. a few moments later she also left and walked away down the sidewalk. from my seat by the window i could see him in his car, watching her walk away. he would occassionally turn to the door, intending to get out and go after her, but stop himself. immediately after he would scold himself for, what he may have thought, was cowardess or perhaps lack of confidence. moments later she was gone entirely and he backed up and drove away.
this happened a couple of days ago but i'm still thinking about it. it was such a wonderful thing to witness and it was one of the more real things i've seen in a while. lately i've felt like many of the people around me are artificial. i see friends who are all pleasant around each other but the moment they are away from each other, all they do are bad mouth the others and accusations fly. i see couples and they may call what they have love, but you'd never know it by the way they act around each other and speak to each other. i wish everyone could have seen what i saw in the coffee shop. even something that little can have an impact on how you view the world around you and it gives you a pleasant reminder that not everything nowadays is fake and every once in a while, if you're looking, what you see may surprise you.
