[Winry is out by the smithy, but not actually in it. The girl has a box of metal pieces next to her, and a small leather pouch with tools. Why is she out here? No reason. Nope. She's not avoiding her house or anything.

Eventually she creates a small wind-up toy mouse. She spins the little knob and watches it go. The small achievement makes her happy

[Sokka steps out of the smithy (which he has decided to use for making eel jerky today to inspect Winry's workmanship. He's suitable impressed.]

Hey, that's pretty good.

[Looking over her shoulder, Winry watches Sokka approach.] Thanks. It's modeled after one I once fixed at a little girl's birthday party.

Oh yeah? I bet she must have been happy about that. Where did you get the parts?

I had some left over springs from a watch I made, and I've been collecting metal scraps since I got here.

[markofthewise]

Now if we just make the same thing, but bigger... we could probably add some kind of of projectile weapon on the back. With the gears in the right position and a steam engine, maybe it could be a miniature self propelled tank.

[Normally she'd be all over that like a cat on catnip, but now just isn't the time.] Or maybe we could hold off on turning a child's toy into a war vehicle.

[markofthewise]

[Sokka leans up against the building. Maybe war machines were in bad taste. He had talked to Alphonse earlier, so he had a good idea what was going on.]

Do you want to talk about it? [He figures there's no reason to clarify what 'it' is, since she probably knows.]

Would you want to talk about it? [And she in turn expects him to know she's talking about his situation this time.]

Nope. But I figured I should offer. [He pauses and looks down at the mouse.] Tell me about that party. How did that girl's mouse get broken?

Well, I'm not sure. I saw she had been having trouble with it, and I fixed it. The problem was most likely a manufacturing defect.

Oh. I figured someone had stepped on it or something.

[wings_thatwait]

[Winry shrugs, watching her own little mouse spinning in circles.]

So, I guess you've probably smelled the delicious aroma of eel jerky in the smithy, right?
