New Song - The Fool (Upside Down)

I’m particularly proud of the chords on this one but I don’t have anything recorded yet for it so I think that wow-ing you with lyrics will just have to suffice.
As soon as I get a rough recording of it though (probably on Youtube) I will post a link to it and also include it on this entry. J

In the meantime - The Fool. Writing this song was a lot of fun. It came to me the way that most of my songs do… as one line put to music that I felt described how I was feeling right at that moment. The first line that came to me from this one was:

“…and I contemplate it all
as I let the blood rush to my head,
while I hang from my tree upside down.”

Lately I’d been feeling quite a lot like “The Hanged Man” from the Rider Waite tarot deck. I’d been frustrated and confused and frazzled about a lot of different things, particularly musically, over the past several months, and it finally occurred to me that I was feeling this way because I was holding too tightly to a false sense of “control”. While this may be true of many paths, music in particular involves a lot of what some might call “luck”. You can put feelers out there, bust your ass learning theory and writing songs, and generally Be Amazing, but at the end of the day you have to hope for a lot to come your way. There’s only so much you can MAKE happen, and the rest has to be left up to Fate.

And Fate had decided a few things for me that weren’t in my original plans for a variety of what I felt were VERY good reasons. And there didn’t seem to be much I could do about it. If I wanted to pursue my music, I had to be able to let some things go.

And so I embraced The Hanged Man. I let go… let myself swing from the branches of life and relaxed, and, contemplating it all, realized that my life had embarked upon a particularly intriguing path; that there really is a lot for me to be excited about right now. Sometimes to realize these things one just needs a change of perspective. I like to think that occasionally most of us would benefit from spending a little time hanging from a tree upside down.

PS - TONS of thanks to Katt McConnell and Gabrielle Aumei, for sitting around pulling tarot cards, discussing imagery, and occasionally helping me find lines while I finished writing this out. You two were a huge help!

~The Fool (Upside Down)~
verse 1 -
Twinkle twinkle over my head if
we don’t get moving I might wake up dead.
But she shines over me in my dreams,
Empress of Everything,
and I can do anything.
She is the strength in the song that I sing.

And the Tower falls down,
in rubble in pieces on the ground. And I’m
weighing whether I’ve found
a Wizard or a Hermit, a King or a Clown.
And I contemplate it all
as I let the blood rush to my head,
while I hang from my tree upside down.

V2 -
All my cards on the table for everyone else. Take my
sword from it’s sheath, roll my staves from the shelf,
because Death’s at the doorstep,
but it means nothing more than a change.
And the Devil was never deranged.
He’s just letting loose without fear,
and we stand as equals on your altar here and the

And the Tower falls down,
in rubble in pieces on the ground. And I’m
weighing whether I’ve found
a Wizard or a Hermit, a King or a Clown.
And I contemplate it all
as I let the blood rush to my head,
while I hang from my tree upside down.

Bridge -
It’s common I’m walking I’ve
found my way perfectly,
and somebody rips up the path.
I wonder if I might find Murphy somewhere,
and violently kick his ass…

And the Tower falls down,
in rubble in pieces on the ground.
And I’m weighing whether I’ve found,
a Wizard or a Hermit, a King or a Clown and I
contemplate it all, as I let the blood rush to my head,
while I hang from my tree upside down.

I’ll just be hangin’ around.
