Top 12 Zelda Characters To Celebrate 25 Years of Zelda

Rage Link Invites You In

Today marks 25 years since Nintendo's sword and sorcery adventure title, The Legend of Zelda hit the Famicom in Japan. Since then, it's been one of gaming's most highly regarded franchises, a constant harbinger of new technologies and a guaranteed hit from instalment to instalment.

In that quarter of a decade, Link and pals have touched almost every Nintendo console, and a few non-Nintendo systems too. If you're counting terrible Philips CDI spin-offs, ancient Game and Watch handhelds and downloadable SNES games, Link's adventures have appeared in over 20 games.

Almost every element that binds the series -- from Link's pointy green hat to the golden triforce logo and from the catchy theme tune to the demonic flock of chickens -- has gone down in gaming legend. Not to mention its colourful, eclectic and just plain weird cast of characters.

From the mute, time-travelling boy-hero to the cross-dressing Princess, a talking tree to an annoying fairy, this monstrous franchise has seen a cast of hundreds spread over distant lands, dream worlds, sprawling Hyrulean kingdoms and massive stretches of ocean. Here's a toast to just 12 of our favourite characters in the series.

12. Error

“I am Error.” Potentially, the series’ most infamous character is a bearded bloke from Zelda II who has nothing more to say than “I AM ERROR.” Programming glitch? Translation mishap? Seeing as you’ll meet another character later who asks you to actually pop-off and meet Error, we can safely conclude that his name really is Error, and he loves announcing that fact to the world. Over and over again. Good on ya, Error.

11.Old Man

“It’s dangerous to go alone! Take this!” Wise words, and a helpful gift from a strange old man who lives alone in a cave with a sword. We don’t know who he is, how he got in the cave or why he gave us a pointy stick, but we’re eternally grateful for his advice. Heck, without him Link would probably have been killed by an Octorok on screen two, and we’d never have had another Zelda game.

10. Postman

"I am the honorable and dependable letter carrier, known to some as... the Postman!" Zelda’s familiar mail-junky has a thing for counting to ten, dashing around and wearing some bizarre postie attire. In fact, all Royal Mail delivery men should dress up in white onesies and red bunny hats.

9.Navi

Hey listen! Hey! Over here! Listen! Hey listen! Watch out! Hey! Sure, Ocarina of Time’s constant fairy companion Navi might be helpful, doling out useful details on the game’s controls, characters, items and baddies, but did she really have to predicate every info-dump with a high-pitched squeak? Still, as much as we’d like to shove her in a bottle, Ocarina just wouldn’t be the same without her. Hey listen!!
You bitches better respect when Navi is talkin

8. Majora

Thought Jim Carrey’s mask was creepy? This face-hugger turns its wearer into a psychotic, world-ending menace. When this colourful visage latches onto the cheeky Skull Kid, he sets about retuning the Moon’s orbit, and sending it hurtling towards the land of Termina. It gives Link three days and a helpful time-travelling song to stop the falling satellite, Groundhog Day-style.

7. Midna

Midna is a sassy imp-like chick who happily takes the saddle when Link is cursed and turned into a werewolf during Twilight Princess. She’s actually one of Zelda’s more interesting and personable characters, with some ambiguous morality choices, a proper character arc and a twist-filled back story.

6.Happy Mask Salesman

If Tingle is Zelda’s token nut-job, the Happy Mask Salesman from Majora’s Mask is a definite close second. His face is trapped in an anguished half-grin, he’s prone to occasional outbursts of erratic behaviour and he let Majora’s Mask fall in the wrong hands, which lead to the Moon taking an apocalyptic collision course towards Termina. Sigh, more work for Link.
(creeper tbh)

5.Tingle

“Tingle, Tingle, Kooloo-Limpah!” Hands-down, Zelda’s creepiest character. A 35-year-old man with a thing for forest fairies and a super-tight green costume with matching red pants. In the west, we might see him as a weirdo, but the Japanese go mad for his skin-tight leotard, and have seen him appear in more than one spin-off adventure. He’s a top cartographer to boot, and a whiz on the balloon.

4. Ganondorf

Ganondorf is the ultimate evil bad guy, with more costumes and personas than Lady Gaga. Sometimes he’s a ginger-haired bloke with a giant sword and a phantom horse that can leap through paintings, while sometimes he’s a monstrous Minotaur with a fire-spewing trident. He can’t make up his mind, but one thing's for sure: he’s always terrifying, but scared to death of silver arrows.

3. Deku Tree

Not only is the Great Deku Tree a wise old Zelda character with an encyclopedic knowledge of the kingdom, he’s also Ocarina of Time’s first dungeon. Not long before he withers and dies, you venture inside the Deku Tree to poke about, kill spiders and pick up rupees. Does Tingle have an intricate maze of pathways and secret passages in his body? Thought not.

2. Zelda/Sheik

Who says Princesses just sit around evil castles, waiting to be rescued? She might have spent her first few games getting kidnapped and captured by Ganondorf, but soon enough she wised up and used her magic powers and a tight-fitting blue jumpsuit to fight back. She even got a staring role in a couple of games. Except they were hideous Philips CDI mutations featuring live-action intros. Oh dear.
I am adding Sheik to Zelda's entry because he was fly and cool and y'all know you had a crush on him/her, don't lie

1. Link

(this is my commentary because for some reason the site's won't show up)The games may be named Zelda but he's the star of the show. The strong, silent type, Link gets roped into impossible situations by some chick he's never met but he always rises to the occasion to save Hyrule's bacon time and again throughout the ages. Plus, he's really packing. Did you see how many weapons he can carry? Where does he PUT them all? Now that's real talent.

Epona was robbed

Well Excccusssseee Me Princess
