How are they divorced, cloven apart by war,
The heart and brain, that generous giant of flame
And that gray ingenious clerk in the pallid core
Of nerves and cells ! For nothing is the same
When will says kill , love stares in a black abysm,
And conscious cortex is set like a murder mine,
With duty damnation, and blood for the only chrism,
Till the spirit shrieks, like the mandrakes of Leah's line,
Torn from its rooted flesh. The soul is forced
By Amnon Death, till shuddering silence falls
And glare is ghastly on indrawing walls
Of the obsossive. O how are they divorced,
The heart and brain, till the inwardly bleeding and maimed
Grope toward love again, in a dark world crumbled and shamed !
