hair

So specifically, I have waist-length brown wavy hair, fairly fine, which I have been told comes from the Jewish side of the family. I haven't cut or trimmed it for the last eight years and have no plans to cut or trim it in the future. Usually I let it dry in a braid or a chopstick bun; if it dries loose, it gets weird and frizzy, but if it dries in a bun, sometimes I can even brush it without it becoming awful. The Jewish side of the family is my dad's side, so my mom's advice on what to do with my hair involved a lot of telling me to brush it because it had little bits sticking out of the ponytail.

Sometimes I put gel in it to make a smooth ponytail, because otherwise it will frizz and look less good. Although if I make a ponytail smoothly right out of the shower, it will generally stay smooth. If I put my hair up when it's dry, before going in the shower, the humidity will make the short hairs around my face curl up into little delicate ringlets which I think look sort of awesome.

Everybody else in the world with hair like this puts some kind of product in it so it forms curls that stick together and look nice, and then they don't brush it. How does this even work? Mousse? Gel? Special other things? Will my hair still be soft if I do this, or will it be weird and crunchy like when it has too much gel in it? Also, how ridiculously expensive is this practice? I feel like any time I've tried to apply a product to my whole head of hair, I've used up a somewhat awkward fraction of the bottle of product. But maybe I am doing it wrong. I've talked to people who claim to be able to do this with just water, but I have never successfully gotten that to work.

And yes, I googled and looked for tutorials, but they were mostly advertising specific brands and didn't seem particularly informative, so I suspect somebody with more of a clue might have better luck sifting through.
