things I don't usually follow

liv made this fascinating post about class in the UK, based largely on her reactions to the BBC's cute little class calculator widget. Which in turn is based on a grand study of class in the UK that just got done. Fascinating, I say, on a number of levels - just looking at how the construction of social class is different in the UK, how different their concept of "the middle class" is, how much more loosely wealth and class are tied in British analyses, how diversity of social connections is itself a class marker. Informative.

And then despite warnings that it should have no application to me, I did the survey anyway (converting currencies, of course), and got this class called "emergent service workers". High in social and cultural capital, low in actual resources, very young, very urban. And yes, American or not, that seems pretty descriptive. I could definitely get behind membership in the "emergent service worker" class. Although it's unclear what this class is supposed to grow up into, because it is so young - I guess we'll find out when we get there.

Perhaps more controversially, I am kind of a fan of the bitter, poignant little post
ccommack has put up today about today's news from across the pond. Although I will note that he has tagged it "flamebait".
