ccommack points out that one in five Philadelphia buildings is behind on its property taxes. On our block it's actually two in five. Not just poor South Philly homeowners like you'd expect, but their landlords, and also Rittenhouse Square development companies. Our "perpetually broke" city is owed $471.5M in property taxes it doesn't appear to want to go out of its way to collect. Inquirer source article here, map application here.

I DON'T UNDERSTAND. WE PAY SO MANY TAXES TO THESE PEOPLE. WHY CAN'T IT BUY US A COMPETENT GOVERNMENT?

Of course, intelligent people might point out that regressive taxation rarely buys a competent government. And that actually, paying large numbers of distinct taxes with distinct paperwork, when we don't even really have assets, is already a sign that there's a problem.
