You know I love to bash discuss Twilight. I suggest people read it, so they can form their own opinions, but I like to bring up the fact that it's badly written, flows poorly, and is generally the most EMO thing I've ever read (please stop whining about how terrible your life is Bella!) Recently I needed an outlet to vent because my brother's girlfriend cries (no really, she cries) if I mention that I don't like the book and I found a group on LJ that hates Twilight. Now, I was a little skeptical because many of the folks who hate Harry Potter haven't actually read Harry Potter, but the women (and occasional man) on this community have read these books. It seems there is a nice mix of young women and and older women who are dissatsified with Meyer's magical land.
Like I said, I've mostly had a problem with the writing and the angsty-ness of the books but I discovered that we have real cause for concern when reading these books. My eyes were opened to a whole new view that I whole heartedly agree with. The Twilight series is sexist and Edward is not true love, he's an abusivive boyfriend. Now, I certainly don't think Meyer's planned it that way and I know that she has rebutted these arguments claiming true love, but I don't buy it. Edward is constantly controlling Bella's actions (he removed the engine from her truck!) There is not a strong female in the series (Alice is no Buffy.)
So, I know lots of you like or love the series. Weigh in. Tell me what you think. I'd like this to be a civil discussion like book club...no harsh words, we love each other. Let the games begin!
