On the surface Lenalee is a nice, friendly girl often seen with a smile upon her face. She is polite to everyone she meets unless you’re on her bad side or one of her enemies, since she always strives to work to the best of her ability. Although she is friendly, she won’t tolerate rudeness towards herself and her friends. She is more than happy to be a shoulder to cry on for her friends and would rather play this role, not wishing to be a burden on her friends or her brother. She’s a social person if she feels comfortable in the group so she’s not shy about meeting new people. However, she’s surprisingly shy about revealing her body and when not in uniform she tends to wear long dresses; the short skirt of her Order uniform is because she needs to keep her legs free to fight.
If there were two words that could describe Lenalee, they’d be compassion and loyalty. Compassion for the times when she felt for her friends where they could not, when she placed her thoughts of others before her own, and when she protected those weaker than her own self. Lenalee’s thought process was always simple; they are my friends. Their pain is my pain. We are the same people. Loyalty for when her friends deceived her, or when they needed her. Lenalee always remained loyal to her friends, it was just how she was.
Another trait of Lenalee’s is that she is very stubborn. Not in the sense that she thinks that she is always right, but rather, once Lenalee says something, she sticks by it. She does not easily admit to her wrong doings, merely for that fact that she does not believe she is wrong-if she takes the time to claim something truly controversial, you better believe she’ll defend it with her dying breath. Lenalee has a much stranger way of looking at things, so people frequently think she’s too stubborn to consider someone else’s ideas.
Most people only see this side of Lenalee due to her profession. As an Exorcist she needs to be on her guard at all times because strangers could easily be Akuma (machines in D.Gray-Man. They come in four levels and in order to level up they must kill humans. Exorcists in this series have the ability to destroy them via their Innocence) who are targeting her. It’s only when she begins to trust people, when she opens up because she holds trust in these people. Ways to acquire her trust are by working towards the same goal, knowing that her friends trust certain people and knowing for a definite fact that people aren’t an Akuma which can be confirmed by Allen Walker.
Lenalee is a sweet to heart girl. She’s kind and gentle, outwardly always smiling and happy. Inwardly, she has many conflicts with herself over a lot of things. The reason those conflicts remain inside of her, is simply because she feels telling people about her problems will force them to worry about her-something she definitely does not want. Lenalee is not a pity-chaser, and she certainly doesn’t want anyone’s sympathy or empathy. Despite this, Lenalee is a worrywart, and does tend to get very emotional over small things. This part of her personality aggravates her, but she can’t help but worry over all those close to her.

She wants to be the backbone, the main support, the person people can go to with their troubles, so she can rectify them, or at least be a shoulder to cry on. As she doesn’t like being a burden, Lenalee hates feeling useless. Even when she knows she can’t do anything she’ll still do her best to do something that will help her friends although sometimes in these situations she’s a little reckless. Sometimes she’ll be forced to lean on somebody else for support but that’s until she can pull herself up using her own strength. Whenever she’s close to breaking down Lenalee will talk herself out of it and often keeps it to herself so she isn’t burdening her friends with it. Despite this, she doesn’t want her friends to suffer on their own and would rather have them share their problems with her. When Lenalee is feeling sad she’ll either keep it to herself as mentioned, or openly cry. It usually doesn’t take long though before she picks herself up and moves along, continuing to strive to do the best she can.
Lenalee is very smart, and has a mind of her own that she uses to think things through to the very last detail. She is considered the “big/little sister” of the Order, because of her love and compassion for all of the people working in the Order.

She gets cross whenever they endanger themselves and often yells or smacks at them for being stupid in these situations. However, she doesn’t mean it with ill intent. She acts like this because she cares deeply about them. Despite being willing to throw her life away for her friends Lenalee still wants to survive just for them, particularly her brother.
Lenalee's one absolute, one thing she can always rely on, is Komui, her brother. When the Order dragged her away from China, her home, after it underwent an Akuma attack, Lenalee was stripped of the only thing she had left; Komui. So, when she arrived at the Order, Lenalee made numerous attempts at escape, all which led her being sent back to the Order. But he brother hadn't just been sitting around doing nothing. Oh no, he loved her just as much as she loved him. He worked his way up in the Black Order, until he was made supervisor, and was then reunited with Lenalee. However, Lenalee believes that she condemned Komui's life to be made of nothing, since he basically gave up his entire social life to be with her. This makes her fight stronger and harder; Lenalee wants the war against Akuma to end, only so she and her brother can go back to the way things used to be.
Day to day, Lenalee often feels guilty. Her older brother, Komui, is this source of guilt because he gave up everything just so he could stay with her when she had been taken to the Order. This can be attributed to as to why her will to survive is so strong and why she tolerates going away to places for a long time. Her brother means the absolute world to her.
As more of a side note-since she was born in 19th century China, Lenalee must have been born a Buddhist. Of course, the Order is the Order of God, so she was either forced to become a Christian, or Rouvelier didn't really give a damn either way, as long as she stayed put. Anyway, because of this she isn't very religious and mainly acts on her own accord. She doesn't care about God and all that, she just wants to go home

Strengths:
STRONG: Physically speaking, Lenalee is up to par, if not higher, then many others. Her strength lies within her legs to be specific, although she is not lacking in other areas. She is also a slenderly built girl, so in combination with her leg strength, it also makes her very flexible.
EMPATHETIC: Lenalee can easily relate to others and their troubles, and thus gives very good advice. Have some mommy/daddy issues? Covered. Separated from loved siblings for long periods of time? Check. Labeled as a mentally challenged person by a man who used to abuse you? Done. Though, through all that, she managed to come out mostly all right, and is capable of helping others, since it distracts her from her life own life.
GRATEFUL: There isn't much that Lenalee takes for granted. Since she's had everything she ever loved ripped out from under her numerous times, she has a love for everything she is given, and likes to make the best of it.
LOYAL: Friends are beyond important to Lenalee. She'd rather sacrifice herself then have any harm inflicted on those close to her. So if one of those people say, got into a fight, Lenalee would be there in an instant, protecting them. She's a very very good friend/ally.
FRIENDLY/SOCIAL: Lenalee loves to make everyone feel as welcome and as homey as can be. It's almost in her job name to make everyone as comfortable and situated as possible.

SENSITIVE: Lenalee has a weak spot for her dear loved ones, such a weak spot that she would be willing to sacrifice herself, in forms of gory death or torture, in turn for her friend's safety.
GULLIBLE: This one is... a bit hard to explain. By gullible, I do not mean she is easily swayed from one of her ideas to another. I mean when her loved ones are involved, she is willing to do anything to protect them, that includes being blinded by her own thoughts. Thus, someone she wouldn't normally trust would easily get her cooperation if her friends were involved.
SELF SACRIFICE: Kinda ties into the "sensitive" trait. Lenalee puts her friends before everything else in her life. So she is willing to protect those close to her no matter what. This includes taking forms of torture, humiliation, and even death.
RELIANT: It's no lie that Lenalee relies on others, just as much as they rely on her. This trait is one she probably won't admit to, since she likes to think of herself as a wall for people to lean on. She doesn't like asking for help, but she can and will under certain circumstances.
"INSANE": It has been said that Lenalee was labeled as insane when she first entered the Order, which may explain why she is somewhat emotionally unstable. I'm not 100% on this, because I don't know if she actually was insane, or if Rouvelier was just being a meanie. But in the end, they say her insanity cleared up when she saw her brother for the first time in years.
