i'm going to be a nerd about this post...

i went to lawrence tech today to see a debate between ward connerly (foreman of prop. 209 in the state of californaia and supporter for the "so-called" michigan civil rights inititive) and frank wu (dean of wayne state university law school).

debate was rather interesting. basically the debate was about affirmative action and its future in the state of michigan. more specifically, the "so-called" michigan civil rights inititive (mcri) that will be on the ballot in the november 2006 election. for those of you who dont know what it is, basically it says that to "not discriminate against, or grant preferential treatment to, any individual or group on the basis of race, sex, color, ethnicity, or national origin in the operation of public employment, public education, or public contracting." sounds good, right? well if you read more of the proposal, you will notice that funds would be cut off from educational institutions simply because it has something to do with race/ethnicity/gender. totally sucks, cos programs (especially ones on campuses at public universities) would suffer and would potentially have to cease to exist. women wouldn't be able to gain access into careers that they are underrepresented in. not cool. that's just bullshit. using deceptive language to the unsuspecting voter would totally trick them into believing that this issue is so worth voting for and not against it.

ward connerly spoke on his behalf of defending it and his standpoint on aff. action (basically saying that people shouldn't be discriminated against the basis of race, gender, ethnicity, national origin, religion, color, sexual prefernces, etc. but this would elimiate programs that have some race/gender basis attached to it and instead use merit alone to determine admitance/hiring. that would suck, especially for women because they are the number one benefiters of aff. action). he put a strong emphasis on aff. action is only used for the basis of soci-economic standards. frank wu did the same and presented his view of aff. action (he said that aff. action is needed to bring diversity in the workplace and in higher education institutions).

this was one of the best debates i've seen. haha, well its more like the only debate i've ever seen (live, that is). wu basically upstaged connerly with his intelligent responses, gracefully. connerly just seemed to be in len's words "in his napolean stage." which makes sense... he's like this little guy who just screamed his option like a commending general. wu was more professional the way he delivered.

i only took two, but the lighting was really crappy.
it would've been awesome to score a picture with connerly. then maybe deface it afterwards...

according to devin scillian (local 4 news anchor and moderator of the debate), asians are "boat people" who came over to the us, especially during the 1980s and are in a top position, because they "teach math at all the universities across the nation". (aparantly that's the only thing asians can do...) tell me devin, if that's so true then why do i suck at math and got barely a 2.0 in college algebra/calculus. WHY?! clearly he isn't familiar with the term model minority...

yes people, asians are boat people. funny how it seems so, cos i've never been across the sea.
