There was a man with white hair working at the music shop across the street. He was a new employee, Kaneki knew it, after all, that was the first time he was seeing him.
Kaneki himself worked at a bookstore, a quiet, warm place located in a crowded street. He liked his own job, how he could stay surrounded by books all day long, reading them, helping other people to know their stories and secrets.
He had been working there for almost five months, following a routine.
He would wake up to get ready for work, where his shift was from eight in the morning to four in the afternoon. The first thing Kaneki did when he arrived at the store was clean the books by the big window, the one that let him see the street and, more important, the music shop.
The music shop itself wasn’t a large building, but people liked to go in there, especially because of the musical instruments and all the CDs, posters and that kind of thing; Kaneki didn’t really pay attention to those, he listened to the songs that Hide recommended and that was it.
But it was impossible to not watch the shop across the street, not when it had a window revealing almost all its interior, a window positioned exactly in front where Kaneki spent a good fraction of his time.
Well, he had to admit, since that white haired man started to work in there things started to get more interesting.
He had that mysterious aura and more than one time Kaneki noticed that he looked sad, although he smiled to all the costumers. He also always wore something black, be it pants, shirt or even his nails.
In the beginning, Kaneki was a little afraid of him, curious, but intimidated too, after all, he didn’t look that friendly.
And one day, while the black haired teenager was sorting and cleaning the books by the window, looking absently through the glass, he noticed that he was the one being observed this time.
Kaneki froze, locking eyes with the mysterious employee across the street.
He thought about averting his eyes, about maybe waving his hand (which would be stupid, probably), but the other acted faster; he smiled. However, it was different from the other smiles, this one seemed real.
Kaneki knew he was just standing by the window with a chocked expression, looking to someone he didn’t even know the name and he possibly looked dumb for it, but… He kept gazing to the white haired man, starting to smile himself, although nervously.
“Excuse me, can you help me please?” - and Kaneki started when he heard someone talking; oh, a costumer.
“Sure, what do you need?” - he asked with a smile, looking surreptitiously to the music shop and noticing that the other wasn’t paying attention to him anymore. Well, maybe it was better this way?
When his shift ended that day, Kaneki gathered his things to leave.
It was cold for the winter was next season to begin, but the teenager liked that weather better; it was comforting in some way.
And while he was closing the door he saw the mysterious employee standing near the window, looking in his direction.
Kaneki started to feel some anxiety, deciding that the best would be to just pretend he didn’t see anything. And so he did.
The problem (if it could be called that) was that it became normal between them. Gazing to each other’s eyes through the glass, sometimes smiling, sometimes whispering simple words that were easy to understand by lip-reading.
“When do you plan to talk to him?” - Touka asked one day, clearly tired of that entire situation - “You’re scaring the costumers with your creepy smiles”
“A-am I?” - Kaneki asked nervously, pressing a book against his own chest.
“Yeah and I swear, if I catch you staring to that weirdo again I’m gonna do something that you won’t like” - that wasn’t a threat, no, Touka always fulfilled her promises, which was worse than any kind of threat.
Kaneki managed to nod, staring to the ground, thinking that, to that day on, he should patrol himself.

He managed to pass a week without further accident, or at least he thought. Truth was: he couldn’t ignore the white haired man, even more, he didn’t want to.
Kaneki still smiled to him through the glass, still searched his eyes, still felt that weird feeling growing inside himself.
“Alright, I’m sick and tired” - Touka said, sighing and heading to Kaneki, ignoring his shocked face.
“Touka! What are you doing?!” - he asked while the girl was opening the door, dragging him by the arm and making him leave the bookstore.
“I told you I would do something, didn’t I?” - she looked to him briefly, crossing the street and heading straight to the music shop.
Kaneki only had time to feel panic, his mouth trying to say something but nothing did really pass by his lips, and when he came to his senses again, the mysterious employee was gazing at him.
“Here. That’s the friend I was talking about” - Touka said, indicating Kaneki; oh, so she knew the white haired man?
“Ah, p-pleased to meet you!” - Kaneki said a second too late, bowing.
Maybe that wasn’t the correct thing to say, after all, he felt like he knew the other for a long time, even though they didn’t even know each other names.
And when he looked to the mysterious employee, locking eyes, he really felt that he knew everything about this man.
“Nice to meet you too, Kaneki”
