Grandma Owens...

"She endured 63 combined months of pregnancy, approximately 2 years of morning sickness, and 15 solid years of potty training one child while having another in diapers." -Uncle Jack

This Saturday was hands down the best funeral I've ever attended. Sure we all cried but it was a good time, somehow. All the uncles brought their guitars and sang - which is what we do when we all get together. Why quit for a funeral? Grandma enjoyed her boys singing ... that's why they did it.

I love my family. We're a huge interesting family with some strange dynamics. I re-met some estranged family members - an uncle (actually his wife) who decided not to speak to the family about 15 years ago and his kids, who now harbor bad feelings toward their mother for kidnapping them from the world. They managed to grow up quite pleasant despite being the offspring of satan herself. I got to meet new spouses and babies of cousins I've not seen in years. I got stuck in the middle of a bitter breakup between my closest cousin and his manipulative wife. Uncle Steve had a seizure again the night of the funeral so we all ended up at the hospital where grandma died just days earlier. Alcohol withdrawal. He's starting rehab this week... Uncle Jack and aunt sheila both work at a prison. they live for the days that inmates escape...they love going on inmate hunts. staking out at a designated point in the woods creating people perimeters. sheila carries a handgun in her purse all the time...she's an interesting lady with the most southern accent I've ever heard...and I'M from the south. Uncle Jack is the guy in charge of the inmates mental health he also teaches part time at columbia university. Good stories come from this direction. I rode back to arkansas with them. Uncle Jack drove...after he popped a couple valium.
