To be fair, Ichigo's was more inspired by a Gundam character's, and Renji's was more inspired by a Naval officer's. But Utena gave me a perverse love of drawing epaulettes that I can never deny.

If no one has ever drawn Rukia as Anthy and Orihime as Utena, I think it's a crime that should be dealt with.

Yes, indeed. However, it's interesting to note that you're putting Rukia into Anthy's role, and if my feelers on the Utena fandom is right, Anthy's got half of the fandom hating her for being both a passive non-action girl and also as the possible big bad.

I love the tassles and cords. I actually made a Nanami costume (back when I was like 40 lbs lighter) and the epaulettes, tassles, and cords were my favorite part.

I felt really sorry for Anthy. I know parts of fandom tend to demonize her, but I found her to be a really sweet, sad character. But my favorite is Nanami, so I'm a little odd. XD

But I think they'd be a good match for those characters, especially design-wise. I was watching the Virtual Star ED last night and was struck by how much Anthy and Rukia and Utena and Orihime look alike.

Nanami warmed up to me in the later half of the anime. M-my unexpected favorite is Wakaba - she's kinda awesome for someone who seems to be designed as a background character. Her duel was heartbreaking.

Mmm, yes - I'm surprised that people would demonize her when her character IS shown as wrongly demonized in canon as well, and the repercussions of it. It's like watching people NOT get the point deliberately.

Oooh, the naked back views, huh?

Also... I think Utena pairings just tripled the number of my 'abusive vicious cycle pairings' even though I rarely fall for those. The twins and the Juri triangle keeps hitting my moe nerves. Hnnnngggghh

Nanami's episode made me cry. And if I think too hard about Wakaba, it depresses me. She's so heartbreakingly normal and gets used hard by the series.

I think the most ironic thing in Utena is Anthy's line that goes "A woman who cannot love other women cannot love herself" or something along those lines. OH the irony, especially when applied to fandom.

The Juri triangle was always really sad to me, especially her first duel. Angelic Creation, Namely Light is still my favorite dueling song, too. And the best thing about the series is, you can pair ANYONE together and... they probably either have UST or have had sex at some point. It's insane.

I know - Nanami's breakdown made me want to adopt her. Wakaba started to gain my interest when she hauled Utena out of her depression after the Touga duel, so by the time her spotlight in the Black Rose arc came around, I was in love with her already. T___T

Anthy's like one of the best character study for the Madonna/Whore complex - and yeah, I got Bleach fandom vibes off it too.

I think you don't even need more than 3 steps to find a character that Akio hasn't slept with in Utena. These characters, oh god.

I think Nanami was the only one in the series who realized that they were all just playing parts in a fairy tale and that her part sucked. It was kind of meta, in its way.

This is why I want you to watch some Princess Tutu. It's like having a pair of Wakaba characters as the main focus.
