Diana Gabaldon.
An author i absolutely adore. Her writing is so brilliant.
Hers are epic historical fiction novels. It astounds me just how much research goes into each. Each book takes me ages to read - and it's not because i don't love them, but because the books are so huge to try and carry around!!! LOL.
But the thing that really got me thinking about her books is the way that she can capture a scene and make it seem so real. Beautiful moments turn up - and they're no cliched. On the contrary, they are often wrought with anger, with guilt, jealousy, sadness... but then they transform into something which is memorable, beautiful... the air becomes heavy and you wish yourself there. It doesn't become a romantic notion, it's not something pretty and fairytale like... the most striking thing is how real it is, and yet how wonderful...those moments still draw you in and have a longer lasting effect on you that the cliched fairtytale ones...
Which got me thinking further.
How many beautiful moments are actually cliched? How many are truly fairytale moments where you look great, feel great, as does everyone else involved. Quite the opposite in some cases. I've found the moments which are the most touching spring from no-where. They can't be staged. Often you feel surprised, caught off-guard. Things develop out of genuine appreciation, thus trancending any state of perfection.
And perhaps that's why you remember the moment better.
Maybe a beautiful moment lies not in it's ability to be perfect, but in the moment's ability to trancend your feelings.
Just a thought.
