Two months ago, I posted
pictures and some info regarding some real-life locations that were featured in DTB. Now, I present a very belated follow-up to that entry.
I deeply regret not having enough time to visit a few locations that wouldn't have taken much trouble for me to go to. There's a possibility that I might return to Japan on vacation this year, so if that pushes through, I'll try my best to visit a few more DTB locations!
Season 1
Episode 2
This is the Rainbow Bridge in Odaiba, and, along with Tokyo Tower, it's one of the iconic images of Tokyo:
Episode 5
Another picture from Tokyo Opera City. The last time I went there, I failed to take a picture of the Singing Man, which is so called because its mouth actually moves as if it's singing. I'm not sure if it was just my imagination, but it seemed as if the statue actually produces sounds!
Episode 11
According to the
official blog, these scenes were set in Akihabara, though the resemblance may not be that apparent, given the greenish hue of the scenery. I couldn't tell that that dreary place in episode 11 was Akihabara, given that this place - which is known as a mecca for otaku - is a very bustling place! Here are some pictures of Akihabara:
And this is the Mansei-bashi, a bridge in Akihabara:
Episode 12
These scenes take place by a row of coin lockers at Tokyo Station. According to the official blog, these lockers can be found near this department store, Daimaru:
But I really couldn't find any coin lockers right next to that place, so perhaps they were moved. Slightly past Daimaru, I did see what might have been the lockers in question:
Also in the same episode, we have this scene:
That building is the exterior of Tokyo Station (specifically, the Marunouchi exit). Sadly, when I went there in late December, it was under renovation:
A tarpaulin I saw depicts how Tokyo Station is supposed to look like once renovation finishes. I wonder if it has been renovated now.
Recurring location: NAOJ
The NAOJ is in Mitaka, which is probably why in Season 2, the Mitaka Documents are named such! On certain days, they hold free stargazing parties where anyone is welcome to tour the facilities and see the stars from their telescope. Unfortunately for me, I missed out on the chances I had because I already had previous commitments or was busy studying on those days! If I were able to join those stargazing parties, I would've been able to take pictures of the facilities - I only ventured as far as the NAOJ gate.
Season 2
Recurring Locations
Sunshine City Aquarium
This is Sunshine City Aquarium in Sunshine City, a shopping and entertainment center in Ikebukuro. The building is sixty stories tall and houses - aside from the aquarium - shops, an observatory and a planetarium. They take up the first few floors of the building (except for the observatory, which is on one of the higher floors, I'm sure); the other floors are filled with offices.
Section 3's Headquarters
I'm sorry; I don't have a screenshot of Section 3's headquarters, but this is the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, and its office is located in Chiyoda, a place lined with government buildings.
Episode 12
First and foremost, a disclaimer: I am not sure if my information regarding the real-life counterparts of these locations are correct, because the official DTB blog has never posted anything about the locations in Season 2. I just saw these scenes and thought that they looked very familiar, but I can't verify my information.
Compare and contrast these pics...
...with the Imperial Palace and the Marunouchi area (a financial district in Tokyo):
