Have a happy period - not!

Sep 23, 2007 19:00

I woke up this morning feeling horrible, cranky, irritable - in short, crappier than ever. No thanks to my period.

As I was going over the sanitary napkins, I saw this statement, "Sweet dreams. Have a happy period." Well, the "Sweet dreams" part sounded kind of thoughtful, actually. But "have a happy period"? It reminded me of this hilariously exaggerated response to said marketing campaign. You can find the link to the (alleged) letter to P&G here. I think it's probably a satire, though, as opposed to an actual letter.

That letter was, by all means, hugely exaggerated. I'm not really going up in arms over that "Have a happy period" thing. But it did get me thinking that periods are far from happy, and that not even sanitary pads, or tampons, or whatever can make periods less horrible. I don't suffer from dysmenorrhea, but usually, during the first day of my period, I get cramps. Annoying, uncomfortable cramps. Usually, I can tolerate them, but given the option of getting up or staying in bed, I would rather stay in bed. And then I feel all bloated and horrible and soggy, like I'm a faucet going drip-drip-drip. Oops. Sorry to boys out there. I hope I'm not giving you horrible mental images. But I hate it; I really do. I bet my cramps are probably nothing compared to what other females go through, but it's just that I have a very low tolerance for pain, so a little pain is agonizing enough for me. A while ago, all I wanted to do was sit down, or stay in bed. But even though I was mostly stationary, that did nothing to help me feel better. I didn't even feel like going to the mall with my family - but thank God that I did. Who knew that a little walking could actually ease my pain? So it's true, after all... Exercise and moving around can ease cramps. I thought that it worked the other way, that moving around would actually cause more torture.

Hours after the agonizing ordeal of having cramps, I feel better now. Okay, not completely better. I hate this feeling of not being dry and comfortable. And from time to time, those stupid cramps still pay me a visit. But I don't feel like doubling over and crying now. But part of me still feels like returning to the softness of my pillows and my sea of blankets, and enjoying my newfound buys - Fullmetal Alchemist, volume 14; Monster, volume 10; Archie comics (still haven't grown tired of them), and DVDs of A Clockwork Orange and Y Tu Mama Tambien (we have to watch the latter of Lit). Maybe later. I still can't get homework out of my mind. I know I have lots of projects and papers to do, but for some reason I can't find the initiative to start. Yet. For now I'm concentrating on finishing the books and movies that I have to read and watch for Lit. When I'm done with that, I can move on to reading the novel assigned to us in Filipino class. And maybe then I can think of a script for a ten-minute play. Or talk with my groupmates about the Chem project. Whoa. This is overwhelming, but I know I have to set my priorities straight. I have to survive Hell Week, and no way will I let my period get in the way!

P.S. Happy 18th Birthday, Andria!
