Does waking up at 4am in order to be home at 2pm seem like a profitable tradeoff? I remain skeptical.

That depends on what you'll do when you get home. If you have some awesome day planned yes. If not then.. no. But then again you'll have more of a day left if you go in earlier. But that also means less sleep.
