OK... so most af you all know about my issues with Dr. James Carey... my EDUC 303 prof... and if you dont here it the deal... he is a bastard that puts his own personal opinion in the class and tries to pull it off as societies opinion...
well for the past week or so we have been talking about Grade Retention (holding a student back)... i have been desperately trying to get my point across to him... but he is the kind of prof that likes to debate, but only if he can win, so he dismisses me
Carey's opinion- There should be no retention for any student until they hit the 9th grade, then if the student has not finished the "core curricula", they will be held back until they do
In this theory every teacher will asses the child, and teach to the child's need in elementary and middle school so that the child will not be missing any information, but they will not be with the majority of their classmates
My Opinion- A child should only be held back for a few reasons and this is only in first grade or younger (higher then that they should prob not be help back at all)...
1)they are not ready to move on to elementary school for a number of reasons such as: they do not understand the concept of reading/printed text, they are not ready to be in a formated classroom... also every child is different and that need to be considered
2) the child needs to be moved to a different school so there is no or little emotional stress from being separated from peers, but still in the same building... in a new school, the students do not need to know that a child was held back
3) there must be full parental, teacher and STUDENT cooperation in the decision to hold a student back... if any one of the three are not willing to try to further help the struggling child, then the child should not be help back
Dustin's brief thoughts- make a summer school type school for elementary schools so there there is no reason a child would need to be held back
OK- yes i realize this is getting long and boring but heres the deal...
all of these opinions are great in the perfect world... but this is not the perfect world... the truth is that there are plenty of good teachers, and plenty of bad teachers... and that goes the same for parents... so what should be done with a child who is struggling to keep up in school...
1) they should be passed until 9th grade and then be held back (this would probably lead to many more high school dropouts because once you get that far with your friends... not graduating with them would be devastating)
2) only hold children back as little as possible... and make sure it will be for the pure benefit of the child
3) insert your opinion here
I want to try and argue this with Carey... but i want to be prepared to defend against anything he might throw at me... also if you agree with his opinion... which is cool... please tell me why...
and if no one replies thats cool.. at least i vented :)
