Through my time in the SCA, I've seen many newcomers days, A&S days, heavy & rapier days; but nothing and I mean NOTHING compares to the day I observed on Saturday. It was, without a doubt, the most successful non-event newcomers/try-something-new day that I have ever seen.
Lord Elphin and Baroness Delia were gracious hosts, whom I believe were able to greet every newcomer throughout the day.
There were over 65 people in attendance! I think there were only 20 or 25 of us being in the SCA for 5+ years. Over at the archery field, Geldamar had his hands FULL. I honestly believe 90-95% of the newcomers fired an arrow down the range!
Baroness Morwenna had to have multiple SCA 101 classes!
We have a new Atlantian Rapier Fighter: Lord Geoffrey (Gryffin?). This gentle is an absolute delight to spar with. So if you get the opportunity, please cross blades with him! He is new to the area, but not the SCA. Got to fight a couple of interesting fights. One was with longsword, and the person I fought claims to have been fighting longsword for awhile. Unfortunately, I do not believe he has had any serious training. Let's just say that the movie "Kingdom of Heaven" should not be looked to for weapon form... My wrist still hurts.
There were many happy faces in Lady Emmalina's Basket Weaving class.
There were at least two dance classes, and apparently, giggling is involved with dance...
Marie-Helene's period cooking class had a lot of interesting smelling things floating from it. Looked like she had a decent turn-out for it as well.
Got to meet the Baron of the Barony of Shattered Glass. He is a very nice guy, was great to converse with and just really super-cool!
Never did get to send an atlatl down the range :(
Just all-in-all a wonderful day!
