Just my two cents in this matter. I really liked the final episode and I wanted to write it down. That's what came out of it, I'm perfectly aware of the fact that it is probably a lil' bit cheezy but whatever I can live with that. :) Discussions and your own thoughts on the episode are always welcome.
Swan Song
I suppose it is a fan-thing to do, but I’m proud to be (a devoted) one so that’s okay...
Besides being absolutely excited about the final episode of season 5, I was also very sceptic. How would they fix all those problems? Would they even be able to answer at least half of the unanswered questions? And even if they would, could they ever live up to the former finals like ‘All Hell Breaks Lose’, which left you stunned and crying your eyes out while wishing Kripke to die a painful death for that cliffhanger?
Before I’m getting started, one thing is for sure: They did. In my opinion (I don’t know if everybody shares it) they did the right thing on every level.
‘Carry on my wayward son’. It’s our anthem, at least it feels like it, and realizing that it is this song, opening the last episode of this season, felt a little bit like coming home to me. In the last two seasons we had the brothers fighting with each other, leaving and hurting each other and we had to watch as they made one mistake after another leading the world finally into the apocalypse. The end of the world, which is so much bigger than were we started from, but when I heard the first lyrics of that song it was all back at point zero. It was once again just two brother’s who give a shit about everything as long as they are together, who could bitch at each other for hours but in the end they would literally die for each other, back at that point when I started to love that show.
The next part made me smile. I would have imagined anything but seeing an old promotional video for a Chevrolet Impala? Well that’s probably the one thing I wouldn’t have considered but I thought it was the best thing they could have come up with, because that’s something that makes it special. It’s like a movie, a movie that reminds you of all the little things that make the show what it is.
It show’s just ‘how’ important the Impala really is, that Dean still cares for his brother and that he always will. It shows how Castiel became one of our favourite characters over the past two years and how Bobby will always be a father to the boys.
This episode might not have been the best in TV-history, probably not even the best episode in Supernatural. But it doesn’t have to be, because to me as a fan, not as a critic, it was perfect in so many ways.
“…so it’s hard to say. Me? I’d say this was a test for Sam and Dean and I think they did alright up against good, evil, angels, devils, destiny and god himself they made their own choice they chose family and isn’t that kind of the whole point?”
(And doesn’t that just sound like the end a beautiful play?)
