Name: Victor Fries AKA Mr. Freeze
Name of Canon: Batman: Arkham City
Canon/AU/Other Game CR: Canon
Reference:
Vengeance is a dish best served cold.Canon Point: Post-Game, including all side missions.
Setting:
The two games Batman: Arkham Asylum and Batman: Arkham City follows mainly two characters:
Batman, the hero and playable character; the other is the archnemesis,
the Joker. The world in which these two enemies are involved in is basically the modern world today with some faint technological advances. All of the plot of the game occurs in a place called
Gotham City which is located in New Jersey; Gotham is based heavily off of dark, gritty cities in the United States, such as New York City
There are, of course, several other factors and people in Gotham that are essential to the Batman mythos in this video game series. For example, one of the biggest things to keep in mind is what
Arkham Asylum is and what it means for many of the characters. Most of Batman's enemies are patients at the asylum due to many of their various obesessive issues -- and probably one of the only reasons why many of them haven't been put to death for their actions. Many of them are literally so insane that they cannot be held accountable for their actions, although some other individuals may disagree on that account. Many of these individuals typically have a gimmick or moniker that marks who they are; for example, there is
Two-Face, who is obsessed with having such a black and white outlook on the world and making decisions by a flip of a coin. There are also individuals like
Poison Ivy, whose genes are genetically modified that causes her to be a part plant hybrid which ultimately makes her connected to the plants she loves and protects.
Batman takes it upon himself to be sure that they stay in the asylum on the off chance that they get the help that they need from the staff. Supporting him in this task of defeating criminals in Gotham and bringing back the inmates of the asylum are
Oracle,
Robin, and on occasion
Nightwing. To a lesser degree and with some romantic tension,
Catwoman the thief will occasionally help. Batman also will find himself being able to cooperate and function well with the police, particularly
Commissioner Gordon.
Bearing all this in mind, the essential idea of the video game timeline is that during Arkham Asylum, Joker allowed himself to be captured by Batman shortly after there was a fire at
Blackgate Prison, which conveniently included many members of Joker's gang. As such, several of the inmates were moved temporarily to Arkham Asylum. From there, Joker broke free of his restraints and let loose most of the other patients of the asylum, effectively taking over the entire island. All of this was for a greater purpose of getting his hands on the
TITAN formula in order to raise a powerful army to destroy Gotham. The short of it? Batman naturally defeated his enemy as well as several of the other asylum's inmates.
Following a year after these events, the new mayor
Quincy Sharp decided for some reason that it was a great idea to put all of the criminals and insane patients into the slums of Gotham, naming it Arkham City. There, the prisoners may do as they please to each other, all of the destruction and violence as they determine. The catch? They simply are not allowed to escape. As such, a gang war broke out between Two-Face, the Joker, and
the Penguin. The real stake for the Joker? He's sick and dying from the massive amounts of TITAN he took in, and is thus seeking a cure, forcing
Mr. Freeze to develop it.
Behind the scenes,
Dr. Hugo Strange is the one who primarily runs Arkham City, planning on initiating the mysterious protocol ten on the city. As it turns out, the protocol was the process to kill all of the prisoners inside of Arkham City, destroying of the insane patients and thugs at once in one fell swoop.
Ra's al Ghul, from the shadows, also oversaw this plan, both funding and assisting Hugo Strange, leading Strange to believe that he would replace Ra's to rule over the League of Assassins.
In the end, though, you can expect Batman to win. Why? Because he's Batman.
REVISION FOR FREEZE'S ORIGIN STORY:
During Victor's univserity days, he met the first good thing in his life, which was a young, beautiful woman named Nora. Quickly the pair fell in love. Not long after, they were married. Victor became employed at GothCorp, also known as the People Company. Their happy days seemed so short to Victor; sometime later, Nora fell deathly ill. Redirecting GothCorp's resources, Victor worked day and night to scramble and find a cure for his beloved. However, no cure was in sight. Time was running short, and Victor was running ragged on no sleep and no food. Yet, he was able to developed a cryogenic storage unit, one in which he could literally put Nora "on ice", keep her frozen until a cure could be found. As such, Victor froze Nora for the time being. For the first time in weeks, he slept.
However, the following day, his employed and CEO of GothCorp, Ferris Boyle, discovered what Victor was doing and stated that Nora was company property. Enraged, Victor attacked Boyle; the latter reacted, shoving Victor into his desk of chemicals. The chemicals were absorbed into Victor's body, and it slowed his metabolism massively; additionally, it also caused his body to physically be incapable of existing outside of a freezing temperature. Thus, Victor Fries created a suit for himself so he could live in -- but inevitably, would also be trapped in if he ever wished to go anywhere that was not freezing cold.
With the suit, Victor also installed physical capabilities, such as tripling his strength. The suit would protect him from heat and would also be used offensively in order to achieve vengeance against Boyle. Naturally, Batman stopped Victor, and it was upon this day that people would call him Mr. Freeze, although it's not really a name he calls himself particularly. Over the course of time, Victor's suit would undergo upgrades in order to better defend himself in the future for his various vengeful rampages and attempts to protect his beloved Nora.
Personality:
As most anyone in Gotham could tell you, Victor Fries is a very, very cold individual. In most cases, he hardly seems to care for the lives of others, whether or not they are innocent. Connecting to anyone on an emotional level is simply something that he seems incapable of to many, although it is under the impression by others that it is also a choice considering his unfortunate history. The sheer disconnection towards the well being of others is clarified easily when Fries learns about hundreds of innocent lives in peril; his response is little to nothing, as it has no direct impact on him or his interests. Sympathy, in most cases, is outside of his emotional spectrum.
The deeper truth, as some more... informed people would tell you, there is at least one emotional connection Victor has, and that is with his wife, Nora. Prior to his chilly accident, Victor had been married to his beautiful Nora. When she became ill with a degenerative disease, Victor exuded a deeply obsessive behavior to find a cure for her. His utter devotion to Nora caused him to steal funding from GothCorp, the company he was working for -- all in order to find a way to help Nora. After the accident that caused him to be as cold as he is, he still keeps a strong bond with Nora. Despite his icy outlook and behavior, Victor himself will describe how much he truly loves Nora. While he is still obsessive over her, the sheer loyalty cannot be described as any other way. Towards the end of Arkham City, Freeze does display a sense of sorrow and guilt outside of Nora in doubting and distrusting Batman, surprisingly apologizing to the Dark Knight when he shows to be true to his word. Thus far in the world of Arkham City, Victor only seems to bear any emotional regard towards Nora (naturally) and Batman. All others are shown a cold shoulder or sheer hatred.
The other main source of emotion for Victor is his anger and desire for revenge. When he has been wronged, almost nothing will stand in his way to satisfy his need to pay "an eye for an eye". He is not beyond threats or torture to those who have betrayed or used him, nor explaining in medical detail of how he would freeze someone's bone marrow and shatter their legs in order to paralyze them, much to the target's horror. Let it be said that getting on Victor's bad side is a terrible idea.
Lastly, despite his disconnection to most things, Victor shows an uncanny ability to be poetic, although typically this is in regards towards Nora. He describes her akin to a flower, and morosely dreams of the day that her warm hand can touch his own, despite how immensely unlikely such a thing is. Still, Victor is artistic in his own way, even if it still mainly revolves around his beloved Nora.
Abilities, Weaknesses, and Power Limitation Suggestions:
Abilities:
- Mainly, Mr. Freeze is a brilliant scientist; he specializes in general genetics and is a cryogenicist. He's also an efficient technician, particularly if it reflects upon his studies in subzero temperatures.
- Due to his skill in being a technician, Freeze was able to create a suit that allows him to still walk and interact to a certain degree with the world around him. However, all the suit does is essentially act as a freezer to him. From there, he has upgraded the suit to include heat-seeking explosives, a heat tracker, and it also acts as a walking computer for him to store data and compute. It is also important to note that the suit gives Freeze increased strength and durability.
- Not necessarily an ability, but considering the genetic accident, it's worth mentioning that Freeze can only survive in a subzero temperature. He can barely scrape by if it's warmer than that if he has the right material to exist on.
Weaknesses:
- Naturally, heat is a weakness for Freeze when he's outside of his suit.
- Raw electricity also can affect his suit temporarily.
- Mobility is also an issue for Freeze, as when he's in his suit he's not exactly the most agile.
Inventory:
Two items will arrive with Mr. Freeze.
- Freeze gun
- His suit that allows him to survive in any temperature; it comes with a small series of heat-seeking missiles; it also contains a small library of genetic data on several illnesses
Appearance:
Mr. Freeze has been described by Vic to look like "A Big Sister fucked a Tron and then they had a really cold Mass Effect." For a better idea,
here he is in his suit and Freeze
out of his suit.Age:
40s, difficult to measure since his aging has slowed dramatically.

Log Sample:
So close. Close against his palm, close enough where he could almost delude himself into thinking that he could feel her warmth; the glass separating him from Nora was flat and perfect against his gloved fingers. He was so close.
Gone again. Here in this station. The unfamiliarity alone is enough to irritate him, but so far, he cannot detect where his beloved was. Even worse, nothing to remind himself of her.
Almost anxiously, he rubs his ring finger. When he was committed to the asylum, they removed almost everything from him. Including both their wedding rings.
Now he doesn't have even her snow globe to gaze into, to remember her by.
"Nora," he whispers to himself, rubbing the empty spot idly. He thinks, remembering so vividly the ring he slid onto her delicate finger. A gold band with small diamonds along the top, scattered like snowflakes.
Everything was taken from him. Even her ring.
With no one to hear him, Victor screams to himself and throws a tray at the window, watching the glass shatter with no satisfaction.
If Nora is not here, then there is nothing more miserable than that. And everything will feel it. The AI who brought him here will regret it immensely. Even if he has to drag everyone else with him.
Revenge it is.

I am well aware of my location. The data provided by this station's AI has been collected.
However, something of mine is missing when I was deposited here. A cryogenic storage unit, large enough to fit one person.
Where is it?
