If I had a world of my own everything would be nonsense. Nothing would be what it is because everything would be what it isn’t
Her head hurt and she couldn’t feel her limbs. Her mouth was dry and her lips felt cracked.
“I…I can’t breathe,” Alice whispered into the stagnant air. When she opened her eyes, she saw darkness. “N…n…No.”
“Shhh my dear, everything is just fine,” a female voice cooed at her and Alice squinted her eyes. A slim figure glowed slightly in the darkness. “We’ll take good care of you,” the woman purred and Alice felt a cool, wet cloth rest over her sweaty forehead.
“Is that better?” A soft finger caressed her cheek and a lock of hair tickled her nose.
“Yes, thank you,” Alice said with parched lips. “Could I have something to drink please?”
“Can she?” the woman asked.
“Yes, we don’t want to kill her,” a man said. His deep voice bounced off the walls of the room. Alice knew she had heard that voice somewhere before. She heard the woman’s clothing rustle as she went to fetch a drink.
“Where am I?” Alice asked and tried to move off this uncomfortable, cold bed she was lying on, but found that her wrists and ankles were bound to it. She let out a small whimper and began to tug.
“I wouldn’t do that, it’s best if you just keep calm,” the man said. “I know that it’s scary and uncomfortable, but it’s what she wants.”
“Who wants?” Alice asked, fear and adrenaline pumping through her veins. Her body was slowly coming back to life.
“The Queen,” another man answered. His voice was lighter and Alice swore she heard it before as well.
“Here, darling, drink,” the woman said and Alice felt the lip of the glass press against her mouth. “Slowly.” The woman helped her in taking small sips of water that soothed Alice’s burning throat.
“Thank you,” Alice said gratefully, not sure why a stranger was helping her, but was thankful nonetheless.
“You’re welcome, darling. We’re all we have now; we need to look out for each other.” She patted Alice’s bare leg.
“Why am I naked?” Alice squeaked, feeling her cheeks burn with embarrassment even though she was sure they couldn’t see her in the darkness.
“The queen,” the man with the lighter, softer voice responded.
“I don’t know any Queen. Where am I?”
“Wonderland,” the man with the deeper voice said.
“Like in the book?” Alice asked, confused. This is all just a bad dream
“Sort of,” the woman sighed.
“I don’t understand,” Alice said. “Do I know you people?”
She felt someone move to the other side of her and gently stroke her hair. “You did, Alice. I’m Hatter,” he said.
“Hatter,” she repeated. It seemed familiar.
“And I’m Jack and she’s Duchess.”
“Emily, please,” the woman said.
Jack. Emily. She should know who they are and yet she can’t.
“She took your memories, Alice. I’m so sorry,” Hatter said, tears rolling down his cheeks. Some of them splattered onto Alice’s forehead.
“We tried too hard to stop her. To save Wonderland, but she…managed to stop us,” Jack said.
“You were very brave though, dear. I’m so sorry that we failed you,” Emily whispered.
“I don’t understand,” Alice whispered.
“We should explain,” Jack said.
Hatter cleared his throat. “One day a girl came tumbling through the looking glass…”

“I wish I could remember,” Alice said, her voice thick and her face covered with her wet, salty tears. Even though she couldn’t, she felt disappointed in herself that she had failed in her task. She was meant to save these people from a selfish, cruel Queen and instead, she had ended up imprisoned for God knows when. “Can you all forgive me?” Alice asked softly and felt Hatter’s lips graze over her own. Apparently they were now lovers. And Jack was her former lover who was now or maybe he had always been (Alice couldn’t remember) with Emily.
“We already have. This isn’t your fault,” Jack said firmly.
“But…”
Suddenly a harsh light snapped on and flooded the room. Alice cried out from the blinding pain and quickly squeezed her eyes shut, slowly peeling them open to get used to the light. She took the time to look at her companions . Hatter was still next to her, a hand resting on her naked shoulder. He had messy dark hair, soft eyes and despite the bruise on his lower jaw and caked blood on his forehead, he was still handsome. She liked to think that he got those bruises from defending her so that made him even more handsome to her. He was wearing a pair of tattered pants and moved closer to her, mouth set in an angry line, poised to protect her.
She was chained to a metal table and could see purple bruises from her struggle with the restraints on her wrists. She felt embarrassed again until she saw the broken looking blonde Emily was naked as well. Emily folded her arms over her naked chest and ducked her head, blonde waves spilling down her arms. There was fresh blood on the bottom of her plump lip and bruises on her upper arms and thighs. Jack looked defiant with his arms folded over his sculpted chest. Alice turned her head to the left and noticed that everything in her line of vision was made of cold steel.
A door opened and in walked a stout woman with flaming red hair and a golden crown upon her head. There was a delighted, sadistic smile on her face. This must be the Queen. Alice felt hatred fill her up and she yanked at her bonds again, trying desperately to break them.
“No use doing that, Alice. I’ve been assured that they won’t break,” the Queen grinned. Behind her stood a man with an interesting hat on his head that almost resembled a club. He was carrying a tray with four vials with colored liquid in them. He was silent as he passed them out and then held the vial filled with a deep blue liquid to her lips.
Alice pressed them firmly together, refusing to open her mouth.
“It’s better not to fight,” Emily whispered and touched her bloody lip as an indicator. Alice watched her shudder as she swallowed the dark green liquid.
Jack had finished his pink liquid and she watched Hatter, with his eyes heavy and apologetic, as he drank the red liquid.
“Reginald,” the Queen growled.
“Please, I don’t want to hurt you,” the man whispered quickly to her. She figured he was a prisoner who just went along with the game. Coward. Alice parted her lips and let him pour it in. It didn’t taste awful.
The Queen and her servant left them in the light filled room.
“What are those liquids? Drugs?” Alice asked.
“She harvests emotions from oysters to give the people of Wonderland special thrills. It makes them addicted and crave more,” Emily said.
Oysters, I’m one of those. “What did she give you?” Alice asked her.
“Greed. Jack got passion and Hatter got lust,” Emily replied.
“What did she give me?”
“Fear,” Hatter whispered. “I’m sorry,” he added as his eyes began to burn with desire and he mounted her.
