Ayanna pressed the cup to Esther’s mouth. “You must drink. It is good for you and the child.”
Esther sighed, parted her lips then sipped the bitter drink of herbs that Ayanna had prepared for her.
“Good, your husband would have my head if I did not look after you,” Ayanna smiled.
“I would not allow him to do that. You are my dearest friend,” Esther replied and rested her hand on top of Ayanna’s.
Esther rested her other hand on her swollen belly. “He will come any day now. It has been awhile, I hope I have not forgotten how to birth a child,” she laughed.
Both women looked up when Rebekah entered the house with a bouquet of wild flowers. “Has my little sister arrived yet?” Her young face was filled with hope.
“Not yet, and will you be very disappointed if I tell you that you will have a little brother soon?” Esther replied and took the flowers from her daughter.
The young girl pouted slightly. “How do you know it is a boy?”
“A mother just knows,” Esther replied.
“A witch just knows,” Ayanna said under her breath and gave Esther a sly grin.
“I will love him. I promise. I am glad to not be the baby anymore,” Rebekah told her mother seriously.
Esther just laughed and shook her head. Rebekah was the youngest thus far and heavily doted upon especially by her elder brother, Niklaus. She knew her daughter loved every moment of it. Rebekah rested her head on Esther’s stomach.
“Will he be here soon?”
“Yes, my love, by the waning moon I believe,” Esther replied and ran her fingers through her daughter’s golden hair.

Three days later Esther was gripped with pain while her children ate breakfast.
“Mother?” Elijah questioned, by her side quickly.
“Go and find your father for me,” she ordered.
Her eldest obeyed. “Niklaus, go and fetch Ayanna. Rebekah, help me to bed.”
Ayanna returned and found Rebekah holding her mother’s hand, singing softly to her.
“Is she supposed to be in pain like this?” Niklaus asked Ayanna with worry.
“It is natural. You are too young to remember, but she was the same with Rebekah. The same with all her children. She will be fine, I promise,” Ayanna assured her with a gentle hand that cupped his cheek.
When Elijah returned with his two younger brothers and Mikael, Rebekah ran into Niklaus’s arms. Tears filled Rebekah’s blue eyes.
“I do not want Mother to die,” she cried.
“Shh, she won’t. Ayanna won’t let that happen and Father certainly wouldn’t allow it. She will be fine,” Niklaus assured her and hugged her tightly.
Esther’s labor lasted through most of the day and well into the evening. Rebekah had fallen asleep in Elijah’s lap after Ayanna had created a concoction to calm the distressed little girl. Kol was sitting at Elijah’s feet and Finn sat next to Niklaus, squeezing his younger brother’s shoulder every now and then. Mikael finally emerged from the room.
“You have a new brother and your mother is nursing him,” he beamed.
Rebekah was woken by her brothers’ delighted cries.
“Come, let’s go visit mother and your new brother,” Elijah whispered into her ear.
“Is it really another brother?” Rebekah pouted. She had hoped her mother had been wrong.
“Yes, and you can spoil him just as we spoil you,” Elijah replied as he guided his sister into the room where Esther was nursing the infant. Esther looked exhausted, yet happy.
“May I hold him?” Rebekah asked.
“Yes, of course,” Esther smiled.
Rebekah held the squirming infant in her arms and ignored everything else that was happening around her.
Elijah pressed a kiss to his mother’s forehead then whispered in their native tongue to her. He had lived through many births and had witnessed the death of three of his siblings before they moved to the new land. He had been the only sibling that had survived from the old country. He prayed for many days and nights when he was mother had been with child in the new land. The family had been blessed with Kol many moons later.
“He needs a name,” Mikael announced with Finn tucked in his embrace.
“Rebekah should decide,” Ayanna said.
Rebekah’s face brightened at that idea.
“Yes, it is tradition after all. I named Bex,” Niklaus smiled.
“I will have to think though. He should have a good name,” Rebekah explained.
“Take a few days to decide, my dear,” Mikael said.

Three nights had passed by the time Rebekah decided to name her new brother. Ayanna had lit various candles and chanted strange words into the air.
“What did you decide, my dove?” Esther asked as she held the baby in her arms.
“Henrick,” Rebekah said with a serious look on her face; daring her brothers to make fun of her choice. None of them did.
“That is a good choice. Very strong. He will be a protector just like his brothers,” Mikael said.
“You like it then?” Rebekah smiled.
“Yes, we do. You chose a good name for your brother,” Esther assured her.
Esther placed Henrick in Ayanna’s arms and the witch blessed the newborn child just like she had with the other children.
Esther slipped her arm through her husband’s and rested her head on his shoulder while Henrick was passed from sibling to sibling while they bestowed blessing and well wishes upon him.
“My love, I think he will be my last. His birth was very tiring,” Esther whispered.
His lips pressed against her temple. “You’ve given me six healthy children, a man could not ask for more. Elijah will be old enough to marry soon and bless us with many grandchildren.”
Esther chuckled softly, she thought herself too young to be a grandmother, and closed her eyes, letting the night air cool her cheeks. Her husband and children were incredibly happy. It was in that moment that she decided to forever keep the secret about who Niklaus’s true father was. It wasn’t worth destroying her family’s happiness.
