Ariel is looking at Ray's old Boy Scout stuff. She came across some small battery and looked at me and said 'I will swallow this." Ummmm... no, thank you. No more hospital trips for swallowed things, please!
I thought I would run errands yesterday and I ended up not going anywhere at all. It was kind of nice, but a little boring at the same time. My mom joked the other day that I liked staying busy, I mean, I was the one who had two jobs in high school. Which, I hadn't realized, is true. I guess that's why I am in school and homeschooling. But it was nice staying home- Trevor's speech was canceled at the last minute and I was planning on getting my school books, but I ordered them and they are ready today to pick up (my english books, my other two classes are being shipped the ELI campus).
So I basically wondered what I was going to do with my time when the kids are teenagers. Trevor and Rachael and Ariel spent tons of time playing while I did a tiny bit of housework, my least favourite pasttime. Then Trevor and I read Swiss Family Robinson and did a math unit test and a phonics assessment. Our Grade one curriculum is too easy right now. It is beating consonant blends into the ground. I mean, it's going over like every consonant blend in the english language. Since they are pretty easy to grasp the concept of (Trevor got it just through reading nonk12 Phonics readers), I'm feeling like we don't need to do a lesson every day on "st" and "mp" and "nt" etc etc etc. I got the curriculum because I thought it would cover "ough" and those kinds of weird rules. Apparently, in the first semester, it only covers consonant blends. I looked at the next group of lessons and they are beginning consonant blends "br", etc. Argh. The problem with skipping the lessons is the sight words. They go over the site words and those words are included in the assessment. But he seems to pick up the sight words very quickly, some he already knows. So we're marching steadily on. I need to add some unit studies. We have been unschooling history and science and I am uncomfortable doing that. I guess we are learning about caterpillars (they are ALL in cocoons now!!) and Trevor journalled it. I have a unit study on birds. I need to pull it out and look at it.
I am rambling about homeschooling. The rest of the day as spent reading a little bit for myself, making this yummy black eyed pea and feta salad from the veggie cookbook for dinner (with deviled eggs and bread) and walking to the firetruck park to look at caterpillars that are not in cocoons yet.
Oh, and we went on a walk after dinner and as we were coming back to the house this woman comes out of the car and says hello. She says it so friendly-ish that I gave her another look to make sure I didn't know her. No. She wants to know if I have ever heard of the book of Mormon. Yes, I say, and she starts to walk towards me and I told her "But I'm not really interested, thanks." I hate being rude to religious people, I mean, it's a little tacky to sell your religion door to door, but geeze, I already have JW's stopping by all the time. But that's all I had to say! She just said "ok" and retreated back to her car. I mean, that's the easiest I have ever gotten rid of religious salespeople. Usually they give me pamphlets to read and talk my ear off for a moment while I nod politely. Trevor commented "There's ALWAYS people around here talking about religion." There is, it's weird. I felt bad last time because I was getting ready to leave and it was pouring rain and these little old JWs stopped by and I wouldn't let them in. I would never get rid of them! So they are talking and handing me papers to take and it's pouring on them because I have no porch or anything to protect from the rain. Ahh, I guess it's their choice.
OK. TODAY I have to pick up my books, take rachael to dance, etc etc. Supposed to be nice today.. yay!
