I've long been rooting for a change to the vampire form - I think it's become class-polarised in cinema and although this is understandable, bearing in mind the Carmillas and Counts in literature, I find it rather dull. For so long in cinema, vampires have been rich, handsome, or upwardly mobile, often aristocratic. Zombies wear plaid and stumble around shopping malls. I just find the division of society idea very compelling.

I think it's interesting that slowly, this formula is being changed, so you get hideous, parasitic vampires (like Willem Dafoe's Shreck in Shadow of the Vampire) or more humanised zombies, like 'Colin' in the film of the same name. Maybe the respective differences between the two types of monsters are being eroded? Or maybe I just find it more interesting to see conscientous vampires and zombies as I'm used to both genres...

I wonder if it has to do with the tanking economy? There's been a spike in zombie fiction lately. Perhaps we find blue-collar zombies more sympathetic these days.

On a personal note - zombies terrify me. Vampires never did.

The precise reason why I liked 28 Days Of Night (the film rather than the comic) was that it closed the gap between Zeds and Vamps, finally realising the latter as animalistic predators rather than a bunch of pale ponces, flouncing around and looking moody.

Much of Vampire fiction actually makes the life of a vampire seem desirable. Whereas the 'life' of a Zombie is a living hell. Zombies are the ones to fear; a numberless mass of blue-collar monsters with no desire other than to eat your flesh.
